ok i need a timing chain for a lt1 im doing cam and heads and everything so need to upgrade my timing chain so if anyone knows where i can get one that is good and cheap it would be a great help. i need it fast

Get a new stocker from your favorite GM parts source. Dealer pricing will likely be horrible but they have massive markup so there are guys out there selling GM parts at reasonable markups.

I know the majority here want to bash the stock chain but how many are you aware of actually failing?
The stock chain's "weak" reputation is born in stupidity rather than reality.

I bought mine from Napa and I was surprized that both the cam and crank sprocket had GM stamped into them. I believe I paid $140 for the set including the chain.

Been a few years but I paid $20 for a GM chain only and I think $22 more recently for a cloyes oversized crank gear which sits on my toolbox, the cam gear is not $100 either.

i have heard alot about using the stock chain and i was woundering if cloyes is good because thats the only one i can get fast enough. but i havent went to napa so that is what i will do first. and just so i know why stock and not a lt4 heavy duty chain or something.

I have heard of more LT4 chains breaking than stockers and obviously there are A LOT more stockers out there.
I am running a stock chain myself, no plans to run anything else either.

Focus your "upgrade" efforts and funds on things that need to be upgraded or that will benifit performance rather than on things that will do the job well.

i really wasnt even going to change my chain but my buddy said i should put a new one in since it does have 86k miles on it. i rather do it now then ripping it all down and doing it later

I have both and in a side by side comparison the stocker looks to be stonger.The cam and crank sprocket are thicker and the stock chain looks more stout also.The HD is roller that seems to be the only plus side.

I agree. When I did my heads/cam setup I just got a new GM chain. I spun to 7000RPM with a .605 lift cam and 135lbs on the seat on the springs and the chain held up just fine.

Yeah wouldn't hurt and especially since a chain can be had for less than $40. I too have a stock replacement chain, I just reused my stock gears cuz they were fine. Hell, I bought a GM chain for my turbo car.

my stocker had 197,000 miles on it when we did the rebuild of the motor..I just replaced it with another stocker..I figure that many miles on a stocker has to say something

I am very glad to finally see the stock chain getting the respect it deserves. I was so tired of guys using the stock chain being "weak" as an excuse to go too a electric WP and a gen 1 chain. I don't know where that myth started that the stocker was weak but we seem to be making progress in shutting it down. Plenty more myths to correct but progress is progress.

The list is too long to get too deep into and come close to remebering it all.
Crap like electric pumps flow more water, they can not they free up power by moving LESS water.
An Opti like any other distributor will act up if water gets inside it, most think this means they are dead, REALITY is that just like any other distributor, once it dries out it will likely be fine. It is also MUCH more reliable than given credit for, neglect is what gives it a bad name.
Name brands often survive on NAME rather than results sometimes these good reputations were born in good performance at one time but they have not kept up with the times, AFR belongs in this catagory. Fram would be another BIG name but instead of being a little behind the times they sell the worst filter money can buy, the Walmart filters are better.
10w-30 is NOT necessarily thicker than 5w-30, matter of fact many 0w-30 oils are very thick for the 30wt range.
The M1 5w-30 everyone loves for the LT1 in reality is a mediocre choice.
LT1 intakes can handle a lot more than the forums would have you believe as will the heads if properly ported.
