Default Hella FF75 Conversion anyone?

I've done my share of searching, and could only find links to threads that were no longer in existence. I know some guys on this board have done the conversion, but what I would like to know, is how hard the actual fabrication is..what I will need aside from what's in the box and normal household stuff.

The plan is to get the new lights in, and get a cheaper HID kit on ebay to get the full effect, but there is a good $150 to be saved by just getting an HID kit and adapting it to my stock housing instead, But I would imagine the Hellas would yeild better results as far as lighting..and look better anyway.

So my question is, which do you think I should do? Hella+HID or just HID? Are there any writeups on the FF75 conversion?
TIA

Thanks for the link, but it's not what i'm looking for.

My camaro is a 96. The Hella FF75s look like this:

These are to replace the quad beam headlights on the early 4th gen Camaros. I found plenty of threads on the circular projector lamps, but i'm not a fan of the styling.

Check out this thread:

Look near the bottom of this page:

You could also modify the existing sealed beam housings to hold brighter new-style bulbs:

Check the retrofit reflector housings in post #3:

I've already done the sealed beam conversion, and I'm still not happy with the light output. I would really like a set of HIDs, but I really like the look of the FF75s. I think I'm just going to go ahead and do FF75s with HID in the low beams.

But the question remains..are there any writeups on the Hella FF75 conversion? Or at least some tips from those who have already done the conversion?

The write-ups there aren't specifically for the FF75, but there are some pics of them mounted with the hood up to show what appears to be the mounting bolt. Scroll to the last write-up, the images are above it.

Putting HID in the FF75 would probably send too much light upward and give off a bad beam pattern. What is the normal halogen beam pattern of these anyway. I couldn't find any pics.

I just found out that the FF75 comes in Fog Light and Driving Light versions which refers to the beam pattern. You can find them (and other lights) at Rally Lights.

The Driving Light beam pattern sends more light down the road, but the concern is about the amount of light sent upwards.

I've been doing some more research:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showt...=59358&t=95477

I'm still not sure on the fog and driving beam patterns for use as headlights since neither is quite right, but it appears that fog for low beam and driving for high beam would be a good compromise.

I could be wrong though.

Maybe someone who's done this can chime in.

Alright, I just hope someone does..

Regardless, thank you very much for all your help! I've never thought a foglight pattern would be appropriate for a headlight, but considering the beam pattern by definition, it might make for a good low beam.

You're Welcome.
Good Luck.

A fog light beam pattern is designed to be low and wide with a shorter distance than a standard headlight, but its probably closer than a driving light which sends some light upward like a high-beam. (A driving light is intended to be used with high beams).

What bulbs are you using in those housings? You might be able to get a brighter halogen bulb in there. You may even be able to retrofit a projector into them.

I'm using silverstars.

This Hella conversion is maybe 50/50 appearance/visibility. But when it really comes down to it, I think I might be better off putting this money into the heads I'm currently rebuilding/improving for the engine. I suppose I could do a 80W/100W halogen conversion in the lights, which would surely be cheaper, and have some money left over for other mods.

If I were to go with a higher wattage set of bulbs, is there a certain brand you would recommend? I've heard some good things about Nokya Stage II lights. I assume I would need some kind of an inline relay as was stated in one of your previous posts?

What model? What housing do you have?

BTW, SilverStar bulbs are not actually brighter, they are just whiter.

If you install 80W/100W bulbs, you'd definitely need upgraded wiring running off a relay. Also, make sure that the bulb's rating is really 80W/100W and not just advertising hype.
