Just wondering what the difference was (if any) in the stock LS1 heads between 98 and 02. Anyone know?

#853 head i believe. they use outer perimiter v/c bolts, as well as other minor things also.

98 heads were 806 castings not 853.The 853 casting is the same as a 241 but cast differently.

maybe a very very slight performance difference, but not enough to make a difference.

98 style heads were perimeter style bolts while 99+ were center bolt

yes there is differences. The newer heads will make more power. But if you are thinking of swapping heads you should at least look at doing some 243(ls6) casting heads. 243's are down in price and you will have much better power gains.

I think if anything the 98's will make up for this difference with their bigger cam. I know we also have a smaller intake manifold, but I'll be damned if I got ripped on HP!

yup..
98 = 806 castings

The later 853 and 241 heads supposedly flow a little better, and I don't doubt it, I'm sure GM made some casting revisions to get 'em to flow a little better. I honestly don't think the difference on a close to stock, bolt on car is going to be anything substantial. On a cammed setup, then you might start to see the less superior heads lagging behind.

I know my '98 trapped right on par for what a strong running full weight LS1 car should run.

One of the guys from Speed Inc. mentioned on a similar thread that the difference was around 5-7 RWHP.

I am not planning on swapping heads, I was just curious if there was much if any difference power wise between them.

If anyone else has info to add, please feel free.

5-7 RWHP isn't really enough to feel on a mild street car. And I doubt it was even that much, and chances are that was one instance and doesn't translate to every car.

I was under the impression the combustion chambers in the 806 castings were larger than any of the other castings on the ls1.. something like 69-70cc v. 66cc.

Other than that to the naked eye there is very very minor differences, cant imagine them mounting to any real performance advantage.

Also can't run a cometic gasket b/c of the notch on the outside of the head. So definitely worth getting atleast a 241, preferably a 243.

i switched the the 241's so i could upgrade to the MLS gaskets, got the heads for real cheap. definitely an upgrade as far as seat of the pants goes, not worth the money to just swap to 241's but after losing a head gasket it was in my best interest to upgrade heads to run the better gasket.

also ive heard there are 2 different kinds of 241's, sand cast and some other cast. supposedly sand cast is a little better than the other but i dont even know what it is so maybe someone could shed some light onto that too
