you could squeeze a 3" pipe to 2.25x3.625 and retain the same cross sectional area
To answer the original question, squeezing it should retain the same cross sectional area unless you squeeze it shut

That being said... it dosent count for disrupting the airflow if you dont maintain a smooth flow. Oval piping is fine... but if you crimp.. bend.. or distort it in a bender and it has "ripples" in the pipe.... that will disrupt the airflow... thus you will loose efficency.

Some clearance 'squishes' you'll never notice. I have seen people hammer a pipe halfway flat and wonder why it wheezed, too. If you need a lot of clearance somewhere, consider going wider in a true oval from Dr. Gas.
