Default Another cam question...

I had planned on goin with the GM847 cam with stock heads. But after I read (stealthformula) stickie it made me think! I'm goin be running stock bottom end so I don't wanna push the rpm's to high so what can will make good numbers/sound choppy as HELL/make a "safe" DD, if that's even possible...

OR should I stick with the GM847? I don't know...

I've heard of a few guys with cam only LT1s with the cc306 and 847 that dyno higher than other cams while KEEPING the same redline as say the cc503. They are higher everywhere on the graph HP AND TQ. I've seen them. One guy I know personally. The only place they lose out is below 2800 rpms. But you have autos, so you should stall them higher than that anyway.

I say go for it. Worse case scenario you make the same power... but you can also grow on that cam.

I'm either doing a custom or 847 myself. Cam only for now. I will do heads ONE DAY, but till then I'll be cam only.

I've had a LOT of people tell me not to do it, but when I look at dynos of people that HAVE done it and the times they HAVE run, I see they are still ahead of the game.

You won't get the answer you are looking for. People are on both sides, mostly against me. Just do what you want to do.

Well actually, my new car is a 6spd, havent updated the sig, but if it doesnt start till 2800 rpms, itll be a hefty clutch dump! What do you think would be a safe shift point?

You can get a custom grind that will be duration wise safe on the bottom end and work perfect with your setup but have a tight lobe separation so it will sound as choppy as the 847, 306 etc. etc.

Also I "MAY" do a mild port job to the heads...

cc503 with its 112 cams real nice but not like the cc306, 847 etc, go on to youtube and search for vids under stealthformula. You could have a cc503 done on a 110lsa to sound like the cc306 but I would recommend a custom cam from say bret bauer or ai that would be ground to match what you want but have say a 109lsa to cam really hard.

A 109lsa sounds like it would be a "show stopper", LOL, but wouldn't that have horrible drivability?

no it would drive fine because the duration would be where you would essentially want it to be. I talked to Bret Bauer about him grinding me a cam and I dont know the specs but it is very similar to my cc503 in terms of duration but with more lift and a tighter lobe separation as in 10X. He said it would share similar drivability.

I would suggest saving up for a good heads/cam package. In reality, heads is where the power is. How much are you going to gain by just a cam swap? 25-30hp? With a good H/C pkg. w/all supporting bolt-ons you will be in the 360-400rwhp depending if an a4 or m6. running in the 11's no doubt.

Well Heads are a bit out of my budget... I do all my work so I just have to afford the cam and all supporting valve train, etc... So I planned on doing a mild port job, so....

And its a 6spd

yeah it the 503 on a 112 but the idle is bumped up real high. I agree doesnt hit as hard as I would like either, it was at first but then over time I just got so used to it that I want something to pound the ground in!
