Default Recommend tires for "pseudo skinnies"?

So I have this pair of 17" chrome SS 10-spokes that I
had narrowed to about 6" and I want to get a good
light tall tire to match the diameter of my ET Streets.
Thinking that is probably a 70 or 78 series. The tire
place I go to usually, doesn't carry any non-steel-
belted tires but I would be rather go with a poly or
glass belted since this would only have to go 50 miles
back & forth to the track and see 120MPH tops, couple
of times a year and I want to save weight / inertia.

I see most "real skinnies" are 3" to 5" and the 17" rim
availability is very slim. Nothing fat enough for me.

Anybody have a good recommendation for a tire that
fits the bill (17", 6" tread, light weight but road legal)?
Probably a regular car "mileage" tire.

225/50R17 is going to be the closest you will probably be able to find.

Those or possibly 215/50r17 as well will work but it will be closer to a 25.5" dia tire.. possibly a 215/60 also but those are a 27" tire and you may have problems with rubbing as stock is 26". They are all 7" width tires though and 6" is at the very bottom of these as far as recommended rim size.

Probably should have looked at the tire size options before you had the rims narrowed though.

Hoosier makes a narrow 17. Do you have pics? I would love to see them.

M&H makes a "skinny" 17 inch radial. I don't know whether, or not, they are made of the same compound as the DRs. I would hope for a harder compound, so you wouldn't have to replace them as frequently as DRs.

This is a picture I saved from a while back. It is not a set up I have. This is the Hoosier tire. I think it is a 26/7.5/17 and are $166 each on the hoosier tires site.

Jimmyblue

Did you get your tire situation resovled?
Would you post pics of your combination?

I am going to have Weldcraft narrow a set of 17" SS rims for the front like the above picture.

I ordered my tires today:

M&H 275/50/17 for the rear
http://www.mandhtires.com/store.php?...on=show_detail

M&H 185/55/17 for the front
http://www.mandhtires.com/store.php?...on=show_detail

I received my new to me, 17" SS rims and will send 2 off to Weldcraft and have them narrowed like the ones in the picture above.

My (2) 17" 2002 SS wheels arrived at Weldcraft today to be narrowed.

James, from Weldcraft contacted me and stated that the wheels can be narrowed down to 6".

I contacted John at M&H because I already purchased the front tires, 185/55/17, to make sure they would fit a 6" rim. John stated that they would fit fine and that a 4" is the least and a 6" rim is as wide as you would want to go with this tire.

Once the wheels get back, I will mount them and post pictures.

So i hate to hijack but they only charge 175 to narrow them to 6 inchs,Damn i always loved the look of skinny tires up front but was afraid for daily driving on 15x4.I may do this with some 17 ws6 wheels up front .This is a very good idea i am glad i found this thread
