U joint problem? Caps popped off

U joint problem? Caps popped off
My drive train setup is a th400 to custom driveshaft to a ford 9 inch with a strange aluminum center section. The u joint is smaller on the rear end side than the transmission side. When I pulled out my driveshaft I found a problem with the rear end side u-joint. The caps that go into the 9 inch yolk had shifted during a pass and popped off when I removed the shaft. One cap stayed somewhat stuck in the yolk do to the angle it had wedged at. The two caps on the driveshaft side at the rear end were undamaged and still in place.
What causes the caps or driveshaft to shift? How do I fix the u joint? Is there some sort of clip that holds the u joint caps on and in place? Does it need to be fixed or do I just slide the caps back on and bolt it in with the u bolts?

There should be some tabs on your yoke that hold the caps in place (keep them from sliding off the u-joint). If you don't have the tabs, is there a groove in there for a C-clip? There has to be one or the other. Otherwise you'll have to get special straps to retain the caps.

I got everything measured and it appears I have a 1330 joint in a 1350 yolk. I couldn't get a very good measurement on the yolk.
The joint caps are 3.62 apart and 1.125 diameter. The caps aren't a perfect glove like fit in the yolk, so I am going to order up a 1350 conversion joint which is a 1.18 diameter. If it is too big, I'll just go ahead and get another 1330 and stick it in.
