Default Big TCs + Big TQ = broken tailshaft housing!

Just a tip for those of you that are stepping up to real power and have big TC's.

BUY A GOOD AFTERMARKET TORQUE ARM!!!!!

I broke my second tailshaft housing today on the dyno. snapped it clean in half!

Apparently I am in the minority but after talking to Ray (the guy that builds the Yank tannys) PatrickG just broke one recently and someone else in Texas last weekend. He says it is mostly due to the large amounts of TQ being applied to the TQ arm and the less than ideal TQ arm mounting location on the tailshaft housing itself. Most aftermarket TQ arms mount to the G-load brace which would cure this problem and aid in traction.

So if any of you are like me and try to go the cheap route on everything just keep my little drama in mind when you hit the dyno.

Yeah it sucks breaking the tailshaft off, but it least it was on the dyno at Thunder Racing. I would have been so boned if it had happened at the track or worse, on the road somewhere far from home. Like you, I will soon be investing in a torque arm that relocates the front mount to a cross-member and get it off the trans.

The monster torque of the TR224 cam must be to blame, hehe!

Huh, that's interesting.

I broke my driveshaft on the dyno with just 311rwhp. I wonder if it was the tailshaft that went, which then broke the driveshaft. The tailshaft was broken clean off, right near where it mounts to the tranny. Torque arm was bent to the side where the driveshaft hit it. One of the ears of the yoke on the driveshaft had sheared right off...makes me wonder what part actually broke first now.

Wow, that blows.

I have the stock steel driveshaft, a beefed FLP tranny, and TR tq arm still mounted to the tranny.

I have about 40 dyno pulls on the car, and 300 passes with this setup.

All good.

I have the steel DS also and I never had any issues with more than 20 dyno pulls but all of a sudden I am breaking them. The only thing I changed is the heads/cam and I put my stock springs back in the car. Wierd I know but I just wanted others to know what COULD happen and heopfully they wont break it twice like me.

More info on this please? Why only on the dyno, not at the track? This smells of something else going on / contributing factors of some sort.....

I have a spohn T/A mounted to a Yank crossmember.
Pick up a crossmember from BMR/Yank and you won't have to worry about it. (Other than a little more vibration)
