2 1/2 X pipe from stock manifolds/cats...Think it'll sound decent?
I'm about to get a 2 1/2 inch X pipe ran from my cats back, and am wondering if this will be somewhat of a decent upgrade for now in terms of power and sound. It'll dump out right behind the axle, with no mufflers just cats. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks guys.

I can't afford headers, as I'm in debt for the car itself. Do you mean Flowmaster 40's? Eventually I'll get mid length's, and bolt them up to the X pipe I'm getting tomorrow. Thanks for the input.

yep, what i would do....
on the drivers side, cut the pipe off where it is round and starts to go flat right after the manifold, leave the passengers side alone. now, where the merge is, cut it off completly. fab up a pipe from the drivers side to the passengers side, now you have 2 pipes the same size right next to eachother. get an X pipe of your choice, put it on and continue the pipes out the back, and put the mufflers right before each tip.

I'm doing the same as you next year, but I'm eliminating the cats using downpipes from a Dynomax offroad y-pipe kit (PN 88028) and using a 2.5inch universal x-pipe kit from Flowtech with built-in cut outs (PN 53630FLT)...combined they'll only cost $335.00 (got this idea from Pro built7 on here who used the same x-pipe kit on his manifolds). I'll dump them behind the axle as well, but I have yet to decide on mufflers. I initially wanted the Bassani true duals, but that crap is still $700.00+ in aluminized form.
With the Flowtech kit I mentioned, it retails for only $130 and has adjustable, cut to fit pipes before and after the X. So in contrast to bww3558's idea, if I were you I would just cut the factory Y-pipe a few inches after the factory ball-flange connector on both sides, that way you can disconnect the exhaust by just unbolting it from the factory connections if you gotta get it out of the way for some reason. From the cut portions of the factory y, I would use some braided flex-pipe for adjustability ($35 each, you'll probably just need it for the driver's side), and attach the x-pipe kit after the flex pipe. The driver's side is what'll give you trouble since it goes off to the side a bit, hence the flex pipe to straighten the path out towards the back. The pipes on this particular x-pipe kit seem to have enough length to adjust to fit. Prices are rounded figures I got off of Summit online. Prepare to have others chime in about "get headers"...LOL.

i think you'd see more gains by adding an ory to the stock exhaust than you would leaving the cats on and adding an x pipe or whatever after them. they ARE the restriction in the exhaust from the factory. the oval pipe that goes under the driver's side floorboard is brilliant. same volume, it's an oval instead of a circle - a lot of people think because it is flatter that it won't flow anything...think again.

S346K has a great point about the oval pipe not being a terrible idea. As long as the volume of the pipe is the same, they could be triangle shaped and flow the same (maybe exaggeration)
To the original poster, you are better off getting rid of the stock cats than the Y pipe, but to actually do this right, you need to get a set of used headers or the Pacesetter ones for like $350 and not have to pay to do this all over again. I tried things the same way you were thinking and I bought a catback, then put headers on later and the catback I chose sounded like ****.
Its like that old saying....anything worth doing is worth doing right.

the 00+ cars have both cats in the same spot on each side, with a 3 bolt flange after the cat attaching the Ypipe, the 98-99's have the drivers side cat like that, but the passengers side is welded in the Y-pipe further down, and cannot be removed without cutting it out.

I stand corrected. I guess I would alter my plan if I had his setup and follow your setup since he does wanna keep his cats.
