Default How much am I leaving on the table?

Ok, if I were to port some heads and use stock size valves how much am i really leaving on the table? To me it doesnt seem enough to warrant the $$ for the valves and $$$ for cutting the seats. Hell the damn things are only .02/.05 larger.

On the same note, if it is a lot of power or flexiblity in future design and building, which valves are better the Ferrea, or the Manley? Or is this a personal choice?

Thanks,
Charlie.

I think its a personal choice, but I've been happy with ferrea. Compared to my 98 valves, you would have guessed the came out of some other motor.

Are they stock size valves? If so, how much power did you increase virtue time or dyno?

Anyone else?

I couldn't tell you what the increase was for valves alone, since I also installed an LS6 intake and a TR227 cam. On the stock 98 valves, the valve stem is thick all the way from the tip to the valve. Where as mt ferrea's are much thinnier right at the end closest to the vavle allowing for better flow in the bowl area.

It's not just valve size. The seat gets larger too.

Tulip cut?
A tulip valve has a concave face lowering valve weight.

Undercut is when the stem is turned down increasing flow.

Thanks for the educating!

Noone has rough ideas or hard line facts on power left from using stock valves over larger..

My porting for many in this area has netted very close rwhp with stock valves or aftermartket. The stock valves flow better with less work, aftermarket may allow more flow on running engine but it hasnt really shown up. All my customers are within 10 rwhp of each other, biggest difference being LS6 head vs. 241 casting 5.7.

I've been thinking about trying out some 2.02/1.57 Manley valves when I do a new set of heads this winter and see what the flow bench shows. Now I might just backcut the stockers and leave it alone. FWIW, MTI uses 2.055/1.60 Ferrea valves on their S2 heads, while most others stick w/ 2.02/1.57. I've seen many reports of stock valved heads flowing very close to the 300 cfm mark.
