If someone put in a new rear end and took it out of a V6 car, you could have 1 wheel wonder right now. And yes, that's what he means, it's going out, as in not working right any more.

see, i doubt the person before me did that, they put the headers on and the coil packs, also took car of the performance suspension for me..i dont think they would have put a P/O **** diff. in the back...but as i said, 1 wheel spins, and it does come with a 'limited slip' differential, limited slip is almost the same as a posi? or is a posi?

mk, let me add something...i found one i can buy for pretty cheap, but its from a 1999 camaro Z28, he says there is an ASR switch in the dash you push for posi on demand or something, would i be able to buy that and put it in my car, and use it as a posi even though i dont have the 'ASR' button hes talking about?

I think asr is traction control, but i may be wrong. It should work as long as your abs stuff hooks up the same and it should on a 1997 car.
The posi was probably worn when you got it. It works with clutches and when they get worn you dont spin both tires all the time. They usually wont break all at once.

Here's the story: With slicks, I'm sure they burned out the posi.
Getting the 1999 rear would be nice to have since it uses a different posi style with all gears instead of clutches. People here have said though that it's not the best for drag racing, not sure why personally :\ The 99 will have .3" bigger rear brakes, but the e-brake system is different so you can't just hook your old stuff up. You'd have to get the rear cable setup as well. And further, the 99 have 4 channel ABS, and I'm not sure if even a 97 has that. There's are per-wheel where as ours is in the center of the diff, or 3-channel (front 2 wheels, rear diff).
I toasted my rear and got a 99 w/o ASR (traction control), but I don't have rear e-brake now. Not that I'm concerned about it.
You can also get JUST the carrier, and not the whole rear end. So you could get one from a 99+ (98 isn't Torsen, still Auburn clutch) and put it in your current rear. That would fix the problem. If you want to stick with Auburn clutch, then same deal, just get one from 93-98. Keep in mind, if you have ASR (TCS I think it's called too) then you'll want to find one with it. Which eliminated 93's since they didn't offer it. I'm sure you could tune it out if you wanted though.

UMMMMMMMM.... i understand half of what you said, the other half is a mystery...does this mean i'd have to do extra work to put the damn gear in? thats not what i'm going for, personally, i'd just like one that i would be able to slap on, bolt back in and be done with it.
oh, and i don't have traction control, so if i install one with it, i dont have to worry about anything right? its just a mechanism that isnt gonna be used right?

Having a traction controlled carrier or rear end shouldn't matter.
And now you're adding words to things You don't have to swap gears unless you want to. The carrier isn't the gears, it's what the ring gear bolts to. The carrier is the posi-unit essentially. You might want to Google about rear ends and posi to help you understand it more.
This is a good start for it all. Remember, you have Clutch, 99+ have Torsen.

oh...yeah, errrr i mean BLAH the gears are seperate from the center piece right? dont the posi's have a spring-loaded thingy or something? most likely, i have an 4auto, so its probably umm....3.23 right? i might go to like 3.73 later, but right now i just want both the tires to spin, so would i be able to get the guys 'carrier', put it in my car and it should work right?:b ang::ban g:
DO I HAVE TO SWITCH THE CLUTCH TOO? if i have to do anything BUT change the 'carrier' tell me because if its anymore, i wouldnt be able to handle it..i have a couple other things more important to change, like get an actual exhaust on my car, and back springs.

You must have the option code GU5 to have the 3.23's, if you have(I believe) GU3 it's a 2.73 car. Should say in the glove box.
