HELP!! THINK I JUST SCREWED UP MY MOTOR!!
I just raced my buddy in his really quick mustang like 7 times in a row, all high speed races (145+)On the last race I thought I was in drive and when it was time to shift to OD, i shifted, but hit nuetral because i had mistakenly already been in OD, and smacked the rev-limiter a few times. After I slowed back down I realized i had a REAL loud tapping noise coming from the motor. Almost sounded like a really loud lifter tick. The car drives and idles fine, no smoke, no leakin oil or coolant. Just the noise....what do you guys think I could have done???? I hope its nothing major. Also, do you think hooking it up to Auto-tap could help diagnose it? My buddy has it and I thought we would hook it up and see whats going on. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Sounds like you may have bent a pushrod or two. Unfortunately, a common occurrance in LS1's. The upside is that it is not too hard to check them if you are remotely handy with tools.

Re: HELP!! THINK I JUST SCREWED UP MY MOTOR!!
the first thing I thought of was pushrods. Especially in the early years of the LS1's I remember people were bending pushrods a lot. I'll have to check them out tomorrow after I get out of class. Does anyone know how much hardened pushrods cost? I am doing a cam soon so I was going to upgrade to hardened ones probably from pace parts or scoggin dickey.

might want to check the rockers as well. One might of come apart. If you drain you oil and find little needle bearings on the dran plug then a rocker came apart.
Good luck,

Why would a pushrod bend by hitting the rev limiter? This was an automatic tranny. He didn't miss shift on a stick (like hitting 2nd when he wanted 4th) and mechanically over rev the engine.
You should still check the pushrods but it could be something worse. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

the cheapest and lowest cost thing it might be is a check vavle...
it makes a loud ticking noise when one goes...

ibjamin....i did mechanically over-rev the engine. Re-read my post. I was manually shifting the tranny, was in overdrive when i thought i was in drive..accidentally shifted it into nuetral while I had the pedal to the floor, and thats when i bounced off the rev-limter. Smacking the rev limter is an easy way to bend pushrods.

Maybe you just thought you were manually shifting it, but the computer was still shifting it, not you.....hence the designation 4L60E! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> And I seriously doubt you've converted it to manual valve body. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
It's probably just pushrods like everyone else has mentioned. Easy fix...ask me how I know!! lol <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_images/icons/tongue.gif" />

Its when you have a M6 and shift into a lower gear and you spin the engine way past the rev limiter.

Re: HELP!! THINK I JUST SCREWED UP MY MOTOR!!
Brian, I think your friend might be right, sorry to say. I to doubt it's a bent pushrod from banging off the rev limiter, but definately rule out any and all the easy stuff first. In my own experience of banging off a raised rev limiter to long, resulted in a spun rod bearing for me. Good luck!

Probably bent pushrods.
Manually shifting a stock 4L60E is a pretty bad idea. I could manually shift my FLP trans but it was built to accomodate that.

Well, try using the screw driver held to your ear trick. If it's a pushrod, the sound should be easily detectable through the valve cover. If it sounds like it's more from the bottom or the middle of the engine, you have another problem.

Wouldn't a main be more of a "clunk" than a "Tic or a "clack". Damn, this sounds like a frickin barnyard. But seriously wouldn't it sound more like a thud or clunk??

Re: HELP!! THINK I JUST SCREWED UP MY MOTOR!!
I have a friend who did the same thing and he bent two pushrods.
Manually shifting will burn out the trans do some research it might seem fun but ultimately the trans will go out really fast.
