Default Just bought car and need HELP!!!

Ok I just bought a 1994 z28 vert. its got 179k miles on it, but I got it for cheap. this is the problem it has. On the way home it was fine driving but at the a light it stalled randomly. no shutter or anything. no sputtering. just dies. Put a new battery in it and that didn't work.It has a hard time starting. it will click and want to turn over but takes a min. acts like its not gonna. the SES light is on. does that do anything? it wasn't on when I bought and came on after It stalled or the battery was changed. I dont remember.

any info would help as I am new to LT1's I have third gens mainly.

first start with doing a voltage drop to check your battery cables, the ses light well that is important to get diag. because that could point you in the direction of the stalling, maybe vaccume leak somewhere

one of the battery cables is alittle cut and is getting replaced. Could this be the reason for the stalling??? How do you diag. a code on a LT1? idk anything about there computers.

If you have an SES light, you need to check that first.

Based off your description, Im going to say Opti... But you NEED to get it scanned, its trying to tell you what the problem is.

Get it scanned, post up the number here.... We can tell you.

sounds like an opti but then again it just clicks...if it was your opti more than likely it would crank but not run...really what it soulds like is your icm or possibly your starter...if you jump your starter does it do the same thing??

Oh I missed the clicking part, what exactly is clicking? The starter I assume?

Jarretthise is right, if its clicking and not cranking theres no way its the opti...

My answer remains the same, get it scanned and you will know exactly whats wrong! Its throwing SES lights for a reason, it may be related but could be something else... I would check there first, THEN try to figure out the remaining problems (If there is any).

Ask around your local mechanic shops. Part stores check codes for free, but I haven't seen a one that has a OBDI (which is what you have) code reader.

Took mine to local chevy dealer they charged 30 bucks and it was the egr valve sticking. Had alot of the same symptoms you have, SES came on after it died at light. Never died again after, just idle issues..Take it to a shop so they can diagnose it.

thanks, the SES isn't always on so I hope they can check it still. It started and ran perfect 4 times tonight. Everyone else I have asked Have said its the OPTi plus it has 179k and is stock so that could be it.

My SES started coming on while driving on the highway. After it died on light, it's always on now.. So yeah, that probably doesn't help you, just giving you something to compare to haha. But good luck!

Also, if it is your opti stick with ACdelco (gm parts) when it comes to replacing it, others i hear not so good things about and am told msd isn't worth the extra $$ unless you're pushing big power.
