2005 GXP tranny big the big one
I am new to this forum so please bear with me.
I have a 2005 GXP that I bought brand new in June of 2005. It now has 126k miles on it....and is sitting in the transmission shop parking lot.
A week ago Sunday, I noticed that my trans temp was running higher than normal. It was about 215 and is usually 193-195. I also saw that I was running about 300 rpms faster at 70 mph on the interstate than it should be.
Well on Tuesday of last week, it bit the big one. I went to back out of a parking spot and nothing. There was no motion to reverse, forward, etc. I shut it off, restarted it, and then it would back up. It made it about 200 yards and just went freewheel. Repeated the above and it moved again. This worked out until I got it to the repair shop.
Today, John told me that when he tried coding it, it refused to communicate with his scanner. He reset the computer by pulling the fuses and tried again. This time, the ABS/TC/etc. started coming on, shutting off, basically freaking out. He started getting all kinds of bizarre codes as well. The tranny fluid also looks like it is burnt. He said that it would go in the shop and that reverse was better than the forward gears.
I have never raced this and it is mostly all highway miles. (My lady friend lives about 100 miles one-way from me and I go there at least twice a week.)
Any ideas? I have been hunting all over the internet but there doesn't seem to be much info out there that is beneficial.

Drop the transmission pan, look for metal shavings in it. Mentally prepare yourself to eat the cost of a new trannie.
GXPs seem to have a fairly large number of weak trannies. Mine blew at 27k miles, I know some other forum members have seen them go as well.
They can nuke themselves in a variety of way, the most common way I've heard is the heat stretching the chain, causing it to rub, creating those metal shavings I mentioned and then those shavings chewing up parts of the trannie.

I don't know about GEN III/IV cars, but if I had to take a guess, I'd think that shutting it off and back on as well as the fact that it's throwing a hissy fit of codes, would mean the computer is needing a replacement. I assume the PCM totally controls the trans on these as well, but I can't say. I would almost think that with the tap shift, there might be a separate module for the trans. I just can't see that small rise in temp meaning much. And if there is a computer problem, I could easily see the temp being off from distorted signal.
BUT PLEASE take everything I said as speculation Just trying to cheapen the repair! Since... I'm in the process of replacing my trans

126K miles is about when I would expect it to die a natural death. Clutches wear, passages get gummed up, etc.
I believe the 4T60E is based on the 4L60E, which is essentially a 700R. I had a series of those in the early/mid 80's and they would die at 125K like clockwork. I am talking like (counting on fingers) 5 transmissions. The only exception in my experience was the 235K miles I got out of my Caprice on the original 4L60E, which seemed to be on the high side of longevity for the unit.

Think it could be his neutral safety switch? I would agree with formula350 that it sounds like a computer issue. Strange for the car to run and move, then stop, restart run move stop etc.

Ok, here is an update. The guy at the tranny shop in Springfield dropped the pan on it and it was a total detonation. He said that there were chunks of clutches, metal, etc. laying in the pan.
He also told me that this was the fifth one of these in the GXPs that he had done. The others gave up the ghost around 70k. Supposedly the amount of torque produced by the engine just basically eats them up.
It was stuck between 1st and 3rd where it had completely skipped 2nd. The computer was losing its mind when it detonated because it short-circuited two solenoids. The oil was completely smoked as well.
I am still surprised that there was absolutely no warning...with the exception of the rise in temperature and a couple of hundred rpms higher at highway speed than normal.

had you ever had your tranny fluid/filter changed before this happened??
I had mine done at 50,000 miles.... I'm almost at 60,000 miles now...

The only RWD transmission that is related to a FWD transmission is the Turbo 200 which is related to the 125, 125C/3T40. Supposedly the 4 speed is related tot he 3 speed but so much is different that the only thing they share is pump, drive layout and maybe the final drive carrier...

After you have it rebuilt by a shop i doubt you'll have any problems out of it. Most shops don't want to see you again and they know tricks n **** to make the transmissions last as far as better bands and hardned parts and upgraded siliniods so forth.

I'm hoping by the time my trans exits warranty some shop will have a kickass 6 speed aftermarket model out for the W body LS4, complete with a reflash so the tapshift will accept it. I'd pay through the nose for that.

Yup that is our stock trans. Insanely easy to blow up.

You got 100,000 miles more than I did! My tranny went south around 24,000. Dealer dropped the pan found metal shavings and replaced the transmission, mine was under warranty it’s a $3,500 dealer repair job.
