Default Gauge overlay install..............but I have a problem!!!!

Ok, I bought the Regency gauge overlay from CentexSS and it's AWESOME!!!! Thanks Jimmy!!

BUT I think I have a few lights out in the dash. Can anyone tell me how many are suppose to be lit??

Look at the RIGHT side of the speedo, its pretty dim compared to the far left(tach side). I'm sorry this pic kinda sucks, but the gas gauge(far right) is really dim.

Here's a pic of the bulbs without the gauges on. In the center(speedo) theres suppose to be 4 bulbs plus the blue LED, but I have only 1 bulb lit! And now the bulb on the gas side is not working, but in this this pic it is.

It looks like you have six (6) bulbs total that are out:
  • The top left one (1) for your tachometer
  • And the three (3) you mentioned above your speedometer
  • Two (2) below your fuel and temperature gauge

Find someone who's good at SMT soldering to remove them and pray you can find a direct replacement online. I'd personally replace all twelve (12).

These kind of issues are generally replaced as a whole when processed under warranty at the dealership.

I think you're right about the ones I missed! I guess I didn't pay attention to them cause I noticed the middle ones right away.

I'm gonna call the dealership in the morning and get a quote.

Save some money and check eBay or get the part number and head over to monsterpartsonline.com.

Oh wow, there's a lot out!

I'm glad you like the overlay, hopefully you can get full enjoyment out of it when you get the cluster squared away.

Is the SS cluster the same as the other trims? I know GXP clusters are different than base model Grand Prixs.

But here, buy this one from Ed Morad: http://cgi.ebay.com/390243912558

$34.99 + $20.00 shipping. - "Does have a crack in the lens, price has been reduced due to flaw"

So since you have the lens from your current one, you should be okay.

What I would do is contact Ed and make sure all the LEDs are lit.

Thanks for finding that! Yes the SS are a bit different from the other trims, mainly the backlighting is different in them.

I think I'm gonna send my cluster off to someone to put in some LED's, it'll run me around the same price as that cluster. Thankfully my Impala is not my DD anymore so I can be without it for a while.

Also, non-SS clusters have tachometers calibrated for 6-cylinder engines, so your tach will be off quite a bit if you tried to use one out of an 3.5 or 3.9 car.

Are you sure about that?

I used to be under the assumption that these things needed to be calibrated/programmed, but someone recently proved me wrong.

This individual installed a GXP cluster (160 max) into his Canadian (speedometer up to 220) Grand Prix GT (3800 supercharged).

It was plug and play and everything lined up as it should.

That's news to me, as well. It sounds like GM has changed the way the cluster interfaces with the PCM. Even on my old 2000 Z28, if you hd to replace the cluster, it needed to be from an LS1 car because the tach would not read correctly. The only thing the Tech II was needed for was to sync mileage between the PCM and the cluster. There was no othe setup.

This is good to know!
