I don't know why anyone still does 3000 mile oil changes anymore. use the damn oil life monitor in the DIC. which, by the way, is assuming that you are using conventional oil, and even then, will calculate that you should do an oil change up to 7000 or 8000 miles. use synthetic and easily tack on another few thousand to what it tells you

I fail to see how this would help anything cost-wise if you're changing it twice as often. If you go by the DIC, you can go up to 10k miles before having to change your oil, and with a GOOD synthetic, you won't have to worry about wearing out any critical internal parts (bearings, cam lobes, etc.). I had my oil analyzed in my GXP when I first bought it at 49k miles and the previous owner used nothing but conventional (wrong weight, even) and it was evident that there was possible rod/main bearing wear going on. After a couple oil changes with Castrol Syntec, the levels of those particular metals were significantly down, meaning I was curtailing any previous wear/damage done by the previous idiot (owner) of my car. Anyways, that's just my .02. I'll never go back to conventional again after seeing some oil analysis reports from the above website...

I always have run synthetic in my GXP, but with having to use 6qts @ $7.xx a quart, plus I have to get about 2 more quarts to put in before every oil change its eats at my extra cash.

Conventional here. Iv been thinking about making the change to synthetic but I cant swallow the idea of it staying in my car for over 3k. Sure I know it lasts longer but one thing to remember is its not only how long the oil actually lasts...its also the moisture that ends up in the oil. This can be debated back and forth all day long but I really feel at the end of the day its better to use conventional and change every 3k with a filter. The only benefit I know of to using synthetic is for cold weather startups and it wont break down as soon as conventional. Is it worth it? IDK lol

I ran synthetic until the car started eating oil, then switched to dino oil to try and stem the problem. I have no scientific proof but since I only add 1-2 quarts between changes I am now within what GM says is okay.

Not all synthetic oils are the same. We've had our Impala for 100,000 miles now, and for the first 40k or so, it never used oil. About a year ago, it began consuming about 3 quarts between oil changes, which for us is about 7000 miles (we run the oil life monitor down to about 15% as we're 95% highway). Anyway, we've always used Mobil One, but at our most recent oil change, I used Kendall Synthetic instead. Shockingly, we've gone almost 5000 miles and it has only consumed a half-quart!! Other than that, the motor is still as quiet as it ever was, and mileage is the same. I'd definitely stick with synthetic but try different brands, as you never know which one could solve whatever issues you're having.

I am currently hunting brands. I was using Castrol Syntec Blend. The stuff optimized for short trips. I tried Mobil 1 Clean 5000 on this past change. I get about 5k to a change because I drive all city and short trips. I am open to changing to something else. Perhaps I can check into the Kendall as well. I made it about the first 30 with no consumption.

I use Mobil 1, always have since I bought the car new.... I've currently got 118,xxx miles on the car now, and it still does not burn any oil at all between changes - which I do at about 6-7000 miles...

And of course, my DOD has been disabled for 6 years too, heh...

And I get my Mobil 1 at Costco when they run their specials on it - get a case of it for $26...

Yup...That's what I used!

BTW- I also used this on the 150,000 miles 2002 Z28 that I bought back in October. It had a little top-end noise on hot restarts with the Mobil One in it. After changing to Kendall, most of that noise is gone.

When I first bought my GXP, it started off burning about 2 quarts in 5k miles. At this point (30k later, Castrol Syntec 5w-30 every oil change) it has almost completely stopped using oil. I might lose about 1/4 quart every 5k.
