I've seen threads on this before but I searched and couldn't find any of them. I have a 93 z28 running the stock alternator. I did the Speed Inc alt relocation that retains power steering, and now my alternator won't charge. I'm guessing it's no longer grounded since the bracket is powdercoated.



What do I have to do to get my alt charging again?

Yea I posted how to fix this in an older Speed Inc thread....


Just buy a grounding strap and bolt it to the back of the alt and the other side to the frame...Easy

you would think for the price speed inc would include grounding accommodations......or at least let customers know its going to be an issue.....

yes, double check the grounds from the engine to the chassis. and the battery to the chassis. the more the merrier

So can I hook the ground anywhere on the alt case? Or does it have to be on a certain spot?

if you look on the back of the alternator on the opposite side of where the big power cable bolts to you will see a threaded hole....get a bolt and bolt the ground strap to that....take a look you sill see what I mean

This is good to know since I have no intention of putting my AC back in and need a relocation kit.

You don't NEED the relocation kit...you could always pick up an A/C delete pulley for 1/3 the cost.

i just had this same exact issue lol.......went nuts trying to fix it then found it..........the power coat on the bracket doesnt allow a good ground conneciton for the alternator case so the car wont charge........run a 8 guage wire from the case of the alternator straight to the battery - terminal and you'll be done.......

this IS the problem i guarantee it 100%

If you can get your hands on one, the 1LE is definitely the best from what I can tell. I snagged one about a year ago and it fit perfectly - no washers or spacing needed.

For the AC delete pulley you can buy them just about anywhere online now for 30-40$. And SpeedInc, why wouldn't you just tell them to not powder coat the bolt holes? I don't know why they do that in the first place, most powder coaters who know what they are doing always tape off bolt holes and such.

This kit was honestly not worth the 400$ nor the TON of time I spent fixing issues installing it. Let's see...

1. Alt bracket hits sway bar
2. Spacers you guys sent me do not fit sway bar bracket
3. Alternator doesn't charge now
4. Belt you guys sent me doesn't fit
5. Trans lines hit the alternator now, had to buy ALL BRAIDED LINES & FITTINGS

I know I'm forgetting something else here... but you get the point. It's been a royal PITA.

If it's powdercoated you will. Easy fix make a ground cable takes 10mins.

Yeah the alt not charging was the easier of the problems, just make sure you tell them what car it is going on, you will need sway bar spacers ect.
