Default Update on old car part 2...

Well after the trans failure of a couple of weeks ago the new owner has decided to go with an RPM level V transmission and a re-stall of the old Vig to 4400 from 4000. The car will be more of a dedicated track car than a street car now. After the trans/converter are installed we are going dyno the car and run it on the dyno's 1/4 mile program and see re-evaluate the rear gear choice. He may step up from 4.10s to 4.30s depending upon the dyno results. After he gets it all back to the strip he's hoping to get into the 10.80s-90s and then start pulling weight out. The goal is to run 10.50s. We'll see...

Ya know, I enjoyed seeing it yesterday and seeing the new owner's vision for the future of the car, but I really don't miss it. I think I was just emotionally done with the car. Its a great car, just not what I wanted anymore. I do enjoy my role as "consultant" though. It's going to be cool seeing it transform into more of a race car now. It's also nice that he wants to explore the limits of the motor in its current state by staying n/a..I think its going to be great to see how deep into the 10s he can get with this relatively mild set up.

I've been itching to see that thing crack 10's for a while, it'll be a good accomplishment.

You and me both! I think it was on its way two weeks ago at Cecil with the way it was launching...I think the new owner got a 1.49 60' out of it before the trans pooped. With a 4400 Vig in there and the possible addition of 4.30 gears I think 1.45s wouldn't be out of the question...Then we'll start pulling weight. He's looking at a Spohn K-member with a manual rack and matching A-arms for starters on weight savings...I can't weight I mean wait...

Alan, tell him to take those 325's off and go with some Hoosiers 275/60/15 that will save on the rotational mass a lot and also help his sixty.

Yeah the 325s were my idea only because I got them for a song. They do work great, but they are fairly heavy...I think he'll go back to a 275 or maybe the M&H 325s which hook extremely well, are much lighter, and are actally a wee bit narrower than a traditional 325. But the way the suspension is set up I'm sure it'll hook just fine on a 275 60...We'll see in the next few weeks...

M/T 325/50/15 = 37lbs
Hoosier 275/60/15 = 24lbs
M/H doesn't list weight.

26lbs of rotational mass is a lot.

Jeff, I'll be running the 325/50's by Hoosier this year. They're a lot lighter than the MT's in the d same size. 29lbs to be exact.

Good to hear you're still involved Alan. I sold my '97 WS6 two weeks ago. It was my first car and I had it since I was 17, so I know where you're at. Only made it one week without that car, and decided to get totally out of street cars. I'm selling off all my stuff and both my two 4th gens that I still have, and picking up another Firebird. Although it wasn't made by Pontiac

Yeah, I knew that going into it, but when the car was mine it saw tons more street than track and, frankly, the extra weight wasn't a huge concern. Now that the car will be a track trailer queen we can change up the combo a bit. If he stays on a radial he certainly doesn't need one with a lot of tread for street use that's for sure!

Once we start really pulling weight that thing is gonna really fly...

if it's going to be a track car now he should put a bigger cam in it. the cam in it now is small for a 383.

That could happen at some point, but for now that cam works very well with the heads and intake. It runs as well if not better than 95% of folks with way more cam. Its a very well thought out combo that has shown its tail lights to lots of cars with way more cam. If he wants to step it up I'm going to suggest a SR cam and really turn it loose...

Part of the fun now is to run mid tens with a cam that everyone said was way too small...
