Default 94 Z28 gear question

Someone please help me understand this.
I am a BBody gut(96 Impala) my cousin has a 94 Z. He was getting some work done and asked the shop to put some 3:73's in his car. this is his quote..."the guy at the AUTOBODY said my posi unit is too small to fit bigger ring and pinions, biggest he could go 3:42"
Now this may be right, but I have never heard this before, is this right?
If not what brand 3:73's can you suggest so he doesn't pay these scammers 2500 for a whole new rearend.

You have a 2-series carrier (2:73-3:08) and will need the thicker set of gears when you go to order them. A 3-series carrier (3:23+) will need the regular gears. You can order both kinds so you don't need a whole rearend.

That is a pretty good price for a 9" installed. On the other hand, I'd probably **** my pants laughing at someone who spent that much on a 10 bolt.

You can also use a spacer, though I prefer getting a 2 series "thick" gear for it. Looking at doing this on my GU2 equipped 94 A4.
