Default F#ck Optis...

There are alot of these and i can understand. And others can understand the frustration that a bad (several bad) optis can cause. The problem is that i nearly got into serious accidents because both my ACdelco and now my chanlder opti **** the bed on me. Tonight on my way home in the tow truck, i thought long and hard about the 24x... itll be a good winter project atop many of the other things i have on my to do list...

I had one issue with a opti and replaced the cap and rotor...then it went another 13k and ran very hard 6900rpms several times. but 24x sounds like a great plan.

I have yet to have an opti just die from regular use... what is causing them to go out?

I realise the opti is infact a big weakspot, but, you have to find the root cause, not the common scapegoat.

Yeah the first time I experienced s failure I was turning (legally) in front of oncoming traffic , suddenly I couldn't get outta the way with the gas pedal.. While it was bearly still rolling I Jumped out and started the car pushing at the A-pillar while people rolled by honking and laughing... ******* sux . The problem?.. Backed out rotor screws ...(no locktite from factory obviously)

Im just tired of having to deal with optis in general. Even if it is just some cap and rotor that needs to be replaced. theres alot of work to get to it. and im tired of it

I say go for the 24x conversion if your that tired of the opti. When my last opti died i said i would not pay 400 for another piece of ****. Now i'm on the long stretch and not looking back with the 24x conversion.

I am very close to being at that level. I refuse to put so much into something that "might" work. there are many benefits then just the opti removal..

Im with yeh brother it ******* sucks... ive had my car 4-5 yrs (Got it at 200k) and since then and ive had two go out on me and zero icm or coil issues. I did have the ignition switch on the column go out on me too. After all the ******* money i spend on this car opti ***** put me over the edge. Ive almost parted the car twice as it was intermittent issues. I had a heatsoaked icm this year so ive spaced it out since then has no issues. I found a great deal on a used 24x kit on the forum classifieds and getting all of my pieces together so when it does **** the bed i have the ultimate fix to give a big **** you to the opti!

Im happy to say I have not experienced the level of opti failures that the rest of you have. However, insted of going with the 24x setup why not go with the LTCC coil pack setup instead? It sure is cheaper and takes a hell of lot less time to finish.

When you would replace the opti, did you take it apart and loc-tite the rotor screws?

I think more likly than not the opti was not installed correctly, i see all these threads about **** opti this and that, when the fact of the matter is the part was not properly installed and came apart pre mature. Sucks that it happen yes for sure, but 2,3 optis later and there still dieing tells me there not the problem. install is....

And FYI 24x is good but just wait till you start haveing coil packs go out on you and your spending 40-80 each coil. if not more

Ive installed 4 optis and always use at least red loc-tite or green bearing mount on the screws. the other 2 ive installed are fine working units on my friends camaro and my dads caprice. i also put just enough silicone around all the seals and around all the seams when closed.

The 24x will of course have its own issues with expensive coils and what not. But id rather have to deal with that then deal with having to do all the things needed to even touch the opti. When it puts your life in danger for 2 separate failures then youll understand the anger and disgust that i have.

I never had issues with mine either. It has seen the track, dyno and lots of miscellaneous high RPM abuse. I like the 24x idea a lot but hopefully my luck continues and I won't have to do it ::runs to knock on wood::

I went 24x on my new setup for the better ignition and better (easier to find a local tuner) setup and I'll never look back, here are some pics of my new setup.
