The biggest indicator is 327 cast into the sides front and back of the block. 5.7 will also be on the deck behind the LH head.

Show some pics, the suffix code wha doesn't jive. The V0223 shows it was built in Flint Mi. on Feb. 23. The only wha code I found was a 2000 346ci. auto. I did see a whd and a whf lt1 code.

Are there any external differences between the 2 and 4 bolt blocks?

I've heard you have to remove the pan and look. But I found out 3 more suffix codes for the 1996 Corvette. They all start with Z, ZXA-lt1, ZXD-lt4 and a ZUF but the info wasn't to clear, a race block it said. Common knowledge would lead you to believe these are 4 bolt blocks.

It is the same casting. Studded 2-bolt has reliably held over 500rwhp through an auto. IMO by the time 4-bolt really becomes worth considering you need to be looking at aftermarket caps so I wouldn't pay any premium for an OEM one.
