Have you considered trying some Duplicolor Metalcast paint? It achieves the same look. Here's a steel LT1 accessory tensioner pulley that I polished to a mirror and then coated with Metalcast red:
Since this pulley was polished, it got the "deep and wet" look once the Metalcast was applied. They also have this stuff called "groundcoat" that they sell with this line of paint that is basically a high gloss silver. If you put the silver on underneath the colored topcoat, you'll get the traditional satiny sheen of regular anodize. IMHO, the "deep and wet" look is 10 times sexier though.

I anodized my Holley fuel rails black, and had the thermostat housing done at the same time. Here's an old pic:
It pretty much is buried under here now:
But I still like the look. I did the thermo housing because when I got it, it was red (knew that in advance) and had "CSI - Simply the Best" on it (didn't know that and it was gay). So I machined off the logo, stripped it and had it done black.
Total less than $50.

Local shop, Santa Clara CA called "PK Selective". Platings and Coatings. I also used them to hard anodize my wheels a dark gray color to make them look like steel:
Very tough coating too.
The anodizing cost for each wheel was $40. They had to do them all at once to get color consistency.

Anodizing is very tough and actually becomes part of the metal structure. Price is cheaper than powder coating by about half, at least around here in Norcal, but the Enviro-***** have driven everything crazy here. May be different in other parts of the country.
Since most GM pullies and brackets are powder coated, it must be very durable. I don't know how it would do on wheels with hot brake dust though. The anodizing on my wheels is untouched by the brake dust.
