Default LS1 Driveshaft Benefits?

My driveshaft is out of balance and I figured if I'm going to take the time to take it off I might as well just upgrade...I see that some people have "LS1 dirveshaft" listed in their sigs...What is the benefit of putting this on vs. an LT1 driveshaft?

basically because all (except 2.73 cars) ls1 cars came with aluminum driveshafts. lighter, better balanced (from what I hear)

I'd like to find one myself as soon as I sell my Moser 9", and put the 10-bolt back in.

2000 and up Cars had this only..not all years of LS1 cars have this.

You will notice a world of difference, I did. They are lighter, weigh about 12lbs actually, and I have no vibration at all from 0 to 150mph.

lightweight therefore there is less weight distribution that takes place while trying to spin the rear end

You have to be careful of clearance, however. Most aluminum d'shafts are larger in diameter than the OE steel units.

I put a Lingenfelter aluminum shaft in my '96 Z-28 and had issues with the shaft hitting the e-brake cable mounts in the d'shaft tunnel, if I hit large dips in the road. My car has the Eibach lowering springs, and Energy Suspension poly motor and tranny mounts. Those mods added up to a clearance issue, and I had to put the steel shaft back in.

They break easier if you are pushing any respectable amount of power. I saw one break at the track on a 12 second car...

Is it a direct bolt in or are modifications required?

Direct bolt in for 82-02 from what I've been told repeatedly. Less rotating mass, and less vibration at higher MPH. As said, it doesn't hold the power as night.

I think the Ligenfelter is bigger than standard LS1

Well while my tranny is out might as well put in an ls1 alum. drive shaft and some new u-joints eh?

I have the original DS on my car so i'm sure it's just a little out of balance huh

Back when some of these cars were still under extended warranty from GM, they did a service builtien and they would swap 1LE units in, was more after the fact than any thing, since most were out of warranty by then.

I really don't think it is worth it if your planning on building the car. Why buy something that is gonna be weaker?
