ported stock heads with LE2 cam
i was wondering if you guys think Porting and Polishing my heads would run good with an LE2 cam with all the supporting mods of course. how much would it cost to get them ported say like at a local machine shop? i like the LE2 heads but if it's cheaper to port and polish the heads and would work about the same with the cam i would go that route. my car is a 94Z A4. i plan on DD the car with some track times as well. thanx in advance.

Is the machine shop fimilar with lt1 heads. If not then you will be better off going with loyd or some of the other reputable porters.Porting heads gets exspensive when guys dont know what they are doing.Especially when you exspect them to perform a certain way.

If you're gonna run stock, unported heads or brand-x discount port job, you might as well just ask Bret
for a custom grind that will work best with that configuration. Same price.
I've been very happy with my LE2s and the accompanying custom cam
FWIW, if it sounds too good to be true ... it is.
(IE: The guy on eBay claiming 320cfm and "ultra ported race gaskets")

You are only about 425 miles from Lloyd Elliott (Mr. LE, hisself). In Texas travel time that's barely over 4 hours. Swing on down to talk with him.
You COULD get them ported by a "local machine shop" but chances are they wouldn't be much good, at least compared to Lloyd's work. Knowing where to remove material and where NOT to is critical. Do you really want to be a guys first LT1 porting, or even his 10th?
Rather than let someone practice on your heads you might be better off just doing a valvetrain (cam, pushrods, springs, etc and rockers). Along with LTs and a good exhaust plus a good tune, you might get what you want out of the car. It's been done a number of times.
I wouldn't suggest asking your "local machine shop" for the valvetrain stuff, however. What works well is very specific.

I know I'm gonna catch a lot of slack from people who disagree and feel that they can do just as well with a dremel in there half lit basement. I'm stating that cylinder heads are NOT a place to skimp. Save your pennies and send the heads to Lloyd.
Here's a question. If you were getting your car painted, would you take it to the guys that do a paint job or two every 6 months to a year or would you take it to the people that have there hands in the stuff every day?
