Default Trans is shot :( How much is a low stall?

I'll never see the track, so even a cheaper quality one would be fine. I'm sure they'll want to replace the torque converter when I get it rebuilt, so I figure if a slightly bigger than stock stall is about the same price I could look into that.

And yes, this trans place is very good

If you want something kinda small i know performabuilt has a 2300-2500 stall for a few hundred bucks but i don't know what the quality of them are.

Well from my reading, something that low isn't going to help any due to that being the stock rating, but I very well could be wrong. I'm not much on Stall info.

Stock on the b-body was 1400, believe half ton trucks were like 1650, thought f-bodies were around 1800 so 2300 would be a step up and honestly in a cheap 12" you want to set 24-2500 as max because they get too inefficient beyond that.

Tranny shop would probably he happy to sell you a $70 Dayco POS for $200. Edge and Precision(vigilante) both offer 12" converters which would be better than the Dayco stuff the tranny shop will likely offer and cheaper than their 9.5" stuff.

Do not even think about using a cheap converter!! This is like opening a can of worms that could cost you a couple of grand in the end. Do it once, do it right. You will be surprised at the gains a quality converter has to offer.

That is why I mentioned Precision and Edge offering 12" units. They are a good middleground between the cheapy remans and the 9.5" stuff most of us run.

Another good cheap alternative is a stall from an S10. I think they will get you a couple hundred more rpm for stall and hold up. Good bang for buck once you go above that you need to go to 9.5" the in between really isn't viable

The S10 converters when put in a b-body usually resulted in about 2200 stall, was popular for awhile BUT then guys who used them hard had the fins start to lay down and they went bad. Just to be clear this was a GM V6 converter used behind LT1s.

PM Chris at Circle D here on the board (sponsor). I got the one in my 96 t/a from him for $350 with free shipping. It's full size andm has got a great lockup clutch stalls 2700 or so rated from them, mine flashes to about 3k according to the tach however accuarte that is. Knocked about .6 off my 1/4 times along with the rebuild. After a couple days of driving I dont notice it unless i'm passing or leaving hard, and then I am sure its money well spent .

i think dacco offers a cheap convertor. i had one a few yrs. back that stalled around 2600 rpm's. i think it was around $275-300. maybe more now. i personally would spend the $ on a good convertor.

Dacco(I spelled it wrong first time) was who I was refering too when I said $70 converters shops will sell for a couple hundred, really are crap, sure sometimes they work for awhile but how long??

Battleship, some guys had trouble with them behind strong bolton cars which were putting near 300 to the wheels. Been awhile but it was mostly guys that were fairly demanding of their setups.

I ran the S10 for a couple of years with no issues before the Yank. It was a nice up grade from stock. A little over $200 new from GM, but like 5 yrs. ago.

Well sadly, all the current cash I have is going to the transmission. I was hoping for something around $150-175. But if they don't really exist then I'll either have to do the S10 one or just go stock again.

What year does the S10 one come out of? I assume it's the 4.3L V6 and not the small 60º V6.

I also don't plan to make over 300hp. As of now I'm sure I'm only around 255ish (or more depending on what all was done in the rebuild of my motor, which I have to find papers to call the previous-previous owner). And even after LTs and other bolt ons I'm sure I'd be just shy of 300hp.

Thanks for all the replies though. Feel free to keep them coming.
