Default T56 making noise in 4th 5th and 6th. any ideas?

First time Ive had the car out since last year. It is whining like crazy in 4th through 6th, but perfectly quiet in 1st through 3rd. It is a stock trans, any ideas on what could be wrong? Thanks

It could be the syncros starting to go out.
Just happened to my trans. 5th and 6th were whining and then they went out a few hundred miles later... gears are stripped.

No problems at all shifting though. No grinding, goes into gear fine, etc. I took off the tailshaft, nothing on the magnets, cant see anything wrong with the teeth on the gears. Tailshaft bearings and races look good, no scoring or heat marks. Fluid looked fairly clean, a little bit of black in it, but not bad.

Rear is definitely making some noise also. I gotta get ahold of Carl from CRP and Strange to see what they can do with that. But at the same mph, 3rd is quiet and 4th through 6th are very loud. Mainly on light throttle to decel. Accelerating it isnt as loud.

I should also mention that the car only has 28k on it and this trans was replaced by GM at around 14k, so there arent many miles on it.

Haha. Just to talked to Jason at TDP. He is rebuilding it and said it is one of the best looking tranny's he ever took apart, lol. Looks like I have another problem. It needed to be beefed up anyway, so I'm not upset it is getting done. Actually happy that I didnt need to buy any extra parts. He is building me a triple cone, 32 spline output shaft f-body trans. Cant wait.

Good to hear! Always nice to hear that... did you ever figure out what was really wrong with it?

Well I guess, nothing. According to Jason everything looked good. So once I get it back I will be looking at the rear if the noise is still there. Not sure how it could be since it was only certain gears. But for now it is still a mystery.

Check your diff oil. I just dropped my transmission today, and while I was under the car, I checked out the diff, and there was a long stream of clean diff oil running along the torque arm. It was a lot, and it was fresh, I had just replaced the diff oil a month ago, soooo time to replace the seal, because my oil is probably low again..

when I first replaced it, the rear quieted down. At least it is a cheap temporary fix to prolong a bigger problem if there is one

I figured that would be your findings given it was making noise in 4th gear.

Ended up being the ring and pinion. Pinion depth was set wrong and gears were eating themselves up. New gears on the way from Strange. All under warranty, great company to deal with.
