Default SLP/Hurst short throw shifter...what's yours feel like?

Just installed mine...don't know if I like it or not. It's not as smooth as the stock one was. How does yours shift?

I also installed the Austin Quik Stick, puts the handle at the perfect height

I'm thinking of going back tot he stock shifter and keeping the Quik Stick.

I have the Hurst with a short stick, it's a little notchy, but not bad, (it has gotten smoother after a few miles) for me it's the perfect combo, I haven't missed 3rd since I put it in
I see no reason to spend $150 or so on an aftermarket shifter now

Thanks guys. I'll have to give it some time then...see if it smooths out. The one problem I do have is when I downshift from 4th, I have been hitting 5th instead of 3rd. I never had that problem with the stock shifter. I suppose it will take some getting used to.

With the way it feels, I cant imagine powershifting 2nd (or atlearst trying to shift very fast)...it just doesnt feel smooth enough for that. It's kind of like the shifter hesitates for a second, then goes into 2nd. Never felt like that with the stock shifter.

The roads have been pretty clean so I had to try it out...but now it's back to snowing

It'll take some time to get used to the new stick (never heard of an Austin Quik Stik), on mine it took nearly 2 weeks (driving it daily) before I felt comfortable enough with it to try a 2-3 powershift

LMperformance.com has the Quik Stick. It's made of chromoly and the perfect height for me...it's a nice piece.

im kinda scared to try the UMI short stick just cause the stock hurst is pretty good height to me...but ill install it and see how it feels...i like the way my brothers 93 cobra shifter is...extremely short throw he has the pro 5.0 and must have a tiny stick

I have the factory stock hurst on mine, not sure how other gm 6 speeds feel but this seems good to me. I love the H shift **** its really comfortable. the only thing i dont like is the tall stock handle thats on all 6 speed fbodies especially after my friend drove my car he said the same thing. so i bought the umi shoft handle and waiting for it to get here, hopefully i can feel the gears better. i just want it shorter so i can use the console lid to rest my arm more its a damn workout driving a 6 speed car using both legs and arms

I dont like to shift too hard too affraid of getting the wrong gear but having a more positive feeling should help me alot.

And after reading all the good things said about the factory hurst shifter with a short handle i have to try it out before changing out everything.

I've driven a couple cars with the factory hurst including my current car. Mine is a bit notchy but on other cars it felt perfect. The standard shifter is long it feels like you are driving a truck.

I drove a 99 cobra. It does have a nice short throw, but the clutch was much more of a workout.

Yeah I have the Hurst **** too...best looking one out there IMO.

Any time you swith to a different shifter stick, you'll hear more trans noise since you eliminate the factory rubber isolator. I'm not driving a caddy, so the noise is ok with me

I have the factory Hurst shifter in mine. Im used to my Integra and when I got in my Z I really feel like Im driving a truck. The gears are so coarse and there is nothing smooth about it. Maybe I have synchros going out but I shouldnt cause the car only has 45,000 miles. If I could get a feel in my camaro that I have in my Integra my 6spd would be automatic cause I can bang gears in less than a heartbeat in my Integra. I've seen that alot of guys are using different shifter sticks with the Hurst. Wouldnt the shorter stick make the gears more choppy and harder to get into gear???

dumped my POS stock 'Hurst' and put in the SLP, run it with a Lou's Short Stick, and I love it. The SLP is NOT the same as the factory Hurst

I have the SLP shifter with a WS6Store short stick. It's alot louder, clunky, rather notchy. But that's because you're losing leverage with a shorter stick, and have almost no noise isolation with the new shifter. It does give you, however, a VERY solid, firm feel. No rubbery or loose feeling, and I have yet to miss 3rd, even though I don't drive her every day so my # of shifts are less then a commuter would be.

so how much of a "difference" is the SLP shifter compared to the hurst?
