Default Light or heavy flywheel?

What kind of flywheel would you put in a 402 LS1 TT (750-850 @ the flywheel) 4000lbs Chevelle with a M6 & 3.42 gears & 25.6in tires? The car will be mostly street with some drag racing.

From what I have gathered the alum flywheel will save you weight and let the engine rev up quicker but will be more difficult to DD with the m6. The added rotating weight of the steel will give you more torque and make it easier to get things moving when you let out going into 1st(more street friendly). .02$

Heavy car with those gears and the first ratio of the t56. Heaviest you can get. How much does the car weigh anyway?

and I say as light as you can get.........

when I went from the stock iron flywheel to the aluminum flywheel in my camaro, it was like night and day.........I never had issues with bogging (before or after) and now with the aluminum I can accelerate faster, change gears faster (engine matches up and down faster), and the engine can pull stronger at cruse.......

The car is not together. Frame is on jack stands, in primer. Building it from the ground up. I est. the car will weigh 4000lbs.

just out of curiosity, why are you going with 3.42s?

with 3.73s and the T56 (what I had with my 10 bolt) you would have a 6th gear/80mph cruse of ~1950RPM.......

I personally run 4.56s in my 12 bolt and only do 2400RPM @ 80mph (equal to most A4 cars with 3.23s)......

I already have the gears installed. I figure with a tall gear I will be able to put more power to the ground instead of spinning the tires. I would probally go down to a 3.73 if the 3.42 dont work out. What do stock Camaro/Firebirds have for gear with a T56?

3.42s......

when I went from 3.73s to 4.56s, I actually found that I can actually take of faster and SMOOTHER with more gear (acutally spin less)........but then again my power band also starts at 4500RPM........

I have an alum flywheel and love it. It revs up fast.... and you won't stall it once you get used to it anyway. These LSx's breathed on a little have 300-350rwtq+ at 2K anyway.....

I vote for aluminum flywheel.

Those gears should work out fine... I have 3:90's and way less power and can blow the tires off in 2nd at near any speed.

I daily drive my aluminum flywheel. 3.89 gears make it easier, but the stock 3.42s were no problem to drive. No bogging, only slight clutch chatter (stock gears; none with 3.89s). And all I have is headers and dual exhaust. Stock cam, heads and LS1 intake .

Aluminum flywheels are a little lighter. But the whole debate is pretty much moot now. The old addage of "heavy flywheels suck" was about old TPI and LT1 flywheels, ever tried to pick one up?
The stock LS1 flywheels are pretty light, light enough you shouldn't worry about an aluminum one unless you are either AutoXing or simply trying to get every last dyno number you can.
Don't get me wrong Aluminum flywheels are great, but I wouldn't spend the extra money on it.
