silicone DOT 5 in clutch system???
i decided to run DOT 5 silicone in my clutch because it has a higher boiling point than dot3/4. figured this would cure my clutch issues at the track. well, idk if this is a bleeding problem, or somthing with the fluid.
i changed the master and slave, i put a mcleod adjustable and an 01+ slave, didnt bench bleed the master, but anyways, i filled the resivor, and installed the mity vac. pumped it up to probably 25 in of vacuum and pumped the clutch slowly, then pulled the hose out by pinching the hose and removing it above the fluid in the resivor to keep it from sucking the fluid out. i can get pedal pressure for about 3 pumps then it goes away. i did this for hours to the same result. is it the fluid or am i doing something wrong. i know i should have bench blead the master, but i forgot, and now the motor is back in the car and i hate to pull the master with it in the car.

NO NO NO! That fluid is not compatible with a DOT 3/4 system which is what your clutch system is. That is going to end up softening or maybe even breaking down your seals in the hydraulic system. However DOT 5.1, which is an ester based fluid, is compatible with a 3/4 system. So you could go that route and be safe. But if I were you i would change that out ASAP before any permanent damage occurs, especially since you but an expensive master cylinder in. Oh and I just changed the fluid in mine and did it the old fashoned way. Works great now. I cant speak for the miti vac method because i tryed it that way.

I was considering dot 5 myself until i found out that it wouldnt work. And ive only been able to find 5.1 online so it kinda sucks you cant get it local. Ill say one thing, bleeding it the old fashoned way blows dick. The first time Dad and I did it with a pressure bleeder and a lift which was great, but we decided to do it this way this time around. Oh well Anyway good luck to you. Oh and I went and bought some heat shield sleeve material. Which seems to work good and you can get it a any parts store. I went and slipped that up the clutch line. If you decide to do that get the 3/4 diameter stuff so it will get around that quick disconnect fitting.

Several years ago, before B&M got involved when Red and George ran Mcleod. I had a long drawn out conversation with Red Roberts about DOT 3 and 4. Long story short he was very adament about using DOT 3 ONLY in his products. Who am I to argue with a industry legend and SEMA hall of Famer?
