Default best way to improve pushups?

Well got my trusty QFR coming up. I can usually do just short of 50 in a minute in okay form. I need 62 to max, so trying to figure out how to get those extra 12. Any special exercises I can do? I try and do pushups every night/before shower but I still seem to be holding my normal amount.

TIA

I usually just let myself fall instead of controlling descent and that helps me out, same with sit ups. Try doin your normal push ups but with your feet on the bed

Get two chairs, perferably the same height.Put one chair facing the other, shoulder distance apart.Place one hand on seat and the other hand on the other seat of chair. In normal push up position,go down as low as you can and naturally go back up.The idea is you are dipping lower than you would when doing it on a flat floor, there by getting a better extension and better results,so the theory goes.Breathing correctly goes along way.Inhale on the way down, exhale viguorously while pushing up,like lifting weights.

You can also try weightlifting. Do lighter weight with higher reps.

No, pushups are unique and weight training will not help. Only more pushups will.

Try incline pushups or have someone put a weight on your back. Either of those should help.

Do the 100's. It's a Training Technique that helped me get to 95 Push-ups in 2 minuyes. I would break into the 60's with-in 1 minute. Best was IIRC 67 in 1 minute. Doing Push-ups for 2 minutes is a bit different, but this will help.

You are going to do a set of 100 push-ups. You are going to work towards doing 100 straight non-stop. This is how it breaks down.

Say you do 50 straight but can't do any more without stopping. Stop there.

Next take a 50 second break (you take breaks based on the amount of push-ups left. 40 left=40 second break). Then Get back into the Push-up position and keep pushing until you can't push anymore without stopping.

What-ever Amount is left, take that much in seconds break. Keep going until you hit 100. If you do this every other day, you'll improve. You are going to want to take 24 hours break inbetween for the 1st 1-2 weeks. After that, you should be able to do it everyday without needing a break.

If you seem to plateu, then it is time to take a break in-between.

Another trick is to use those 4-6" handles. They help you by making you extend the push-up further.

It certainly helped me. It's obviously not the only thing I do, but it definately helps. I'm horrible at pushups, or was. I could hardly get 55-60 on my apft's before I started hitting the gym. The next test I took I maxed. Barely, but I did.

You must combine endurance and strength training. Weight training will help but only after you do push ups.

start doing dips at the gym. that increase your shoulder and your tricep strength and that is mostly what you need to do pushups. i'm in the air force also and this helped me with my pushups. i maxed at 52 completed them in 38 seconds

Get push up bars. My dad got a syst in his wrist from doing push ups every day on his hands.

I do 60 before dinner every day. I use push up bars, and elevate my feet.

Main thing is get push up bars. Second, raise your feet to put more weight forward.

I can get by with the pushups, but curl ups (sit ups Navy style) totally kick my ***. I'm tall (6'4") and skinny, so it just kicks my *** doing situps. How can I get better at them? I mean I can't pump out more than 30-40 in 2 minutes without my back and neck dying. What am I doing wrong? I hate lifting weights, so what can I do?

It's really that last few when you're really pushing yourself that help.(pun was not intended, but it works). Slow down, fast up makes you work the hardest.

another thing that helps is negatives. like transam12sec said said its the last ones that count. so you go to muscle failure and then get up anyway you can and control yourself on the way down, then repeat. be carefull cause it can really tear up your muscles. it works with situps also. anybody else try these.

Air Force max's are 62 pushups in a minute. Its not hard with some training. I found that a good amount of weight lifting and pull-ups, tied together with a pushup workout, made it a cake walk.

Just took my commissioning PFT....62, 53 (dammit) and a 10:02.
