How Many Miles Is Too Many Miles
My Camaro has 97K on it and i am wanting to cam it and put headers on it and was just wondering if that is too many miles to start doing that kind of stuff, whats your opinion on this and how many miles does your LS1 have on it?

I just put headers on mine with an ORY last spring, I have 114k on the clock right now and she is doing just fine. I will be interested to see what others have to say about the cam though, that will be my next mod if it will not require a rebuild first...

Yeah i dont see where headers would cause any problems but the cam could possibly put excess wear on things, thats why i would like to get as many opinions as possible on this before i spend the $1000 dollars on putting a cam, springs, timing chain and oil pump on it, i want to know if i should focus that money on a rebuild.

Some engines show minimal wear at 97k. Some have been neglected and are in similar condition to engines with 197k. Others have been downright abused and are already dead/dying by 97k.
Are you the original owner of the car?
If you are concerned about the integrity of the engine, consider getting an oil analysis and compression test done. These things should help build a decent picture of your engine's internal condition.

Yeah id say mine is pretty healthy it runs spectacular and the oil after 3k miles comes out looking dang near as clean as it did going in, ive heard the rod bolts in the LS1's stretch pretty bad and are about done by 100k though is this true?

Do it. Putting extra muscle in a car is....well...FUN. Man, you have a Chevy ls1 the best bang for the buck, if it blows up then build it up.... Don't worry have fun, that's what these cars are for.

All of the replies to threads like these are usually based on nonsense and heresay...if the engine has good compression (compression and leakdown test) and good oil pressure, take a sample of the oil, send it to blackstone labs and ask them what they think of it...after that, mod the car.
My Camaro has 193K on it, I took all the stock exhaust (manifolds, cats, Y pipe and catback) off in March of this year...when it was in the 180K range, put QTP longtubes and a set of 3" true duals on the car...and if I wasn't spending money on the engine for my other car, I'd have a cam and heads going on this one before summer is over.
What if a 2000 has 14K miles on it, but 400,000 hours idling? My 2000 has 193K on it, but barely any time just sitting around idling...what if it had only 20K on it, 1/4 mile at a time, with the oil not at the right level and the gas pedal on the floor?
If you ask me, the odometer doesn't record all that much regarding the history of the car unless YOU have owned it since it was new.

Mileage means nothing and the LS1 is a great motor. I have had several with over 150k and a cammed Formula with 130k. Here is a testament to the LS1! This is the last one i owned! Look at the odometer lol
Here is a video to the last LS1 F-Body I owned it was poorly maintained by the previous owner yet still started up everytime. I have owned serveral LS1's with over 165k. My C5 just hit 90k 2 days ago
