Default thrown rod....now what

my 98 camaro z28 just threw a rod through the side of the block while also taking out my starter and oil pan. this car was completely stock but i had plans of heads, cam, intake, long tubes and other small upgrades this winter with the car. now with this new predicament, im wondering if should upgrade to a different ls engine rather than replacing it with another ls1? would there be any other real benefits besides maybe a little more displacement? the car is just a street car that occasionally goes to the track. the car will be getting the bottle as i have the old setup from my 00 trans am. im mostly just looking for some other thoughts as to how i can build this car back up. since the car will be down for the winter now, i can easily dump 8k into it to build the car right. thanks

5.3 or 6.0 build shouldnt be too pricey.

This is what happened to my LS1, so I went with forged 6.0. Thompson Motorsports had some great deals, and it worked out great

best bet to get a complete ls2 then rather than scabbing together parts from the ls1 and a short block?
