Default advice on good laptop to run hptuners software

i posted this late last night in the pcm forum, i gotta feeling its such a freaking newbie question its not going to get answered.

sooo, whats a nice brand/model laptop i can use for hptuners? i have no problems buying used off ebay. cheaper the better, 300 at the most.

i know i need a native serial port, which i assume is how it connects to the interface cable. i dont want to play doom3 on it or anything, but it'd be nice to be able to play dvds and store alot of mp3 and movie files. a tough or proven model is what i'm looking for. it would be nice to be able to charge it from the car, and is a certain o.s. more user friendly and less maintenence than any other?

feel free to call me a dumbass and flame me, just as long as one peep gives me some decent direction its worth a little humiliation imo. i did try to do some research, but i've been on a mac for 10 or so years and only use a 'puter at school&work until i got a mac laptop for home a few months back. l

long story short i dont know a damn thing about peecees other than i need one to run the hptuner software.

thanks in advance.

i think i'll either go with a dell, compac, or ibm. something over 400mhz and with like 256k ram and a 30gig or bigger hd.. i just dont want to buy a laptop and THEN learn after the fact that i would have had a better machine with another brand/model. first time buying a pc and i dont want something thats known to break easy or get a buggy o.s.

i'll figure it out...

thanks for answering.

You should be able to get a fairly good laptop off ebay dirt cheap. all o.s are buggy and crash after a while. I make 2 partitions, one small with only windows on it and re-install all the time. Keeps it running at tip top shape.

Is this only a hp tuners comp or are u going to use it for other things?

If you are going to keep it and use it some for other uses i would try and get one with at least a 1.0 gig processor and windows xp definetly. Most of the other windows are out dated.

You can get xp free off the net Just to see how u like it then u should purchase it

I would personally go with a Macintosh if you can find one. A Mac with a slower processor and less RAM will usually give you better performance than a higher rated non Mac. I recently paid $1800 for a Dell 9100 Laptop and I haven't been all that satisfied with it. I went with it because Macs tend to cost more, but now I regret it. Good luck man.

i got a sweet mac laptop, i just would rather have a actual pc to run hptuners with than try to use some buggy mac-pc app.

The guy who did some HPTuning on my car used an ancient laptop (Pentium 166, I believe) and it worked just fine - plenty quick, too. You don't need much.
