Rear Ends
Posted: Fri Feb 04, 2005 11:08 am Post subject: F-Body Rear-Ends
I'm thinking of putting Nittos on my car and am worried about what the extra traction could possibly break. Power wise I'll have a SSRA, lid, Long Tubes, LS6 Intake, ported throttle body, and a tune. I know there is a lot of varience between what rearends can handle, some people break them stock some last past 400 at the wheels. With those mods and Nittos, how much of a risk am I going to be running that I'll break something? Would you guys be worried? I HAVE the money for a new rear I just don't want to spend it, I'm already planning to drop around $2500 into the car this spring. It's beatiful what nice fat paychecks can do to your spending habits. I know nittos would be the best mod track wise I could do as I'm only getting 2.1 60's right now but if I'm gonna run a big risk of breaking something expensive I'd just keep my Eagle F1s and pick up time after the line. Part of the reason I'm worried is because I don't know crap about rear ends. So if I do break something I'm worried I might not notice it, or will have no clue how to figure out what it is or how to fix it. What is the most likely thing that I might break and how expensive would it be? Are there any steps I could take to strengthen this rear so I could worry a little less? Thanks.

If I was you I would sell your rear while its still together and get a 12bolt/9ich. But if your set on keeping your 10 bolt you can get a rear end girdle stud kit & better axles. But your going to be on borrowed time.

I could barely give away a used 10 bolt I had... But I am running 315/35/17 nittos on my stock 10 bolt with similar mods. I have quite a few passes on it and I don't treat her too nice The 10 bolt is just starting to show signs of breakage. It makes a little noise on the highway and seems to ratchet when turning with the wheels cut all the way. I'm going to take it easy until I can get a 12 bolt under her.
In conclusion, I have approximately 30 passes with similar mods - and she could take a few more...

I don't know if I really would want to sell it on the chance that I sell my car again in a few years. If I end up trading it in I would ratehr throw the 10 bolt back on and sell the new rear abck to someone else and still make some money back. That would definetely save me more money than just selling a 10 bolt now I'd think.
