It doesn't stand for anything actually. Every manufacturer puts a letter on the different platforms, to differentiate them for assembly. But they don't stand for any word. For example, the Corvettes are known as Y bodies, Impalas and Caprices are G bodies (I believe) and Cavalier/Sunfires are J-bodys. All manufacturers do it actually. Someone at the dragstrip was telling me that their Dodge Aspen is known as an f-body on the Chrysler side.

It refers to the 4th letter of your cars VIN number. The "F' is the body style. All Camaro and Firebird VIN numbers will have an F as the fourth digit.

Yea each platform is lettered, but I fiantly remeber that the "f body" orignally got the "f" b/c the bodies were made by "Fisher"? I think I heard this somewhere, and I have seen some older camaros and what not that on the door sill had a little plate that said "body by fisher", I duno if this is true or total BS but I figured someone else in here might know.

Fisher used to build most if not all of the GM bodys. My 69 Chevelle, mom's 61 Impala, 66 Pontiac had body by fisher on the door sill.

I saw a History channel special on Firebird a few years back, like a couple years from when 4th gens first came out. Aparently the project name at GM was F-car when they first were starting work on them in 66, so when it came time for body line designation, they called it the F-body.

If you don't mind, every time you chime in with a stupid Ford-is-superior comment on a freaking GM forum, I'm going to chime in as well with something equally as lame. Actually, I'll continue to do that whether you mind or not. I don't see any harm in it. Thanks again for the compliment. Oh, and no post would be complete without a few of these:

F stands for "F***! What the h*** just blew past my Mustang?" <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Speaking of which, what body style is a new Monte Carlo?
