depends on how your going to use the car. if it's goin to be a daily driver i'd say around 80k or lower, but if you're going to be tearin it down and building a high horsepower car then mileage doesn't mean too much

Know the previous owners habits.
Hmmm, fine question. I would say that depends on the previous owner(s) driving (I'm sure any ls1 owner has rawdogged it more than a few times!) and maintenance habits (Oil & fluids, performance parts added...). I bought my ls1 with around 80,000 on it. This being the first GM I have owned (Other than an 88 Cutlass Calais given to me by my parents which has long since bit the dust!) I cannot yet attest to their durability. My other car which I hope to be replacing in the not to distant future is a 94 Tbird LX with 191,000 miles on it that runs strong. Anyway...keep the previous owner in mind.

I'd like to chime in and support that statement. GM proving grounds has GEN III motors there with over 300K miles (!)

I sprayed an otherwise stock 98 formy all the way to 226k...and still, no problems.
Of course, then I had a 01 TA let go with only 40k on the clock (well, it wasn't entirely the cars fault )

I would pick one up already modded, OR get a 98 or 99 for real cheap and use the rest of the money for a nice motor at SDPC or other sponsor. That's the route I'll go if I get a cheap f-body again.

yes i bought mine from a woman, who bought it from an old man w/ like 20k miles on it.
had 85k on it when i bought it and has 100k on it now.
if its got a cam and alot of motor work, that means they were probably an enthusiast, and probably a few times. if its all stock down to the paper air filter, they probably diddnt. everything is relative, like the guy above said "mine let go at 40k" and another guy said "i sprayed mine to 226k" you never can tell.
