How good is a 98 Z28 with 122k miles?
Hello guys,
Currently I'm driving around in a v6 pony Relax!
But now I'm thinking of jumping ship, because I found an auto 98 Z28 thats pretty cheap, $5888 (stupid dealers and their odd numbers ) I have to say its pretty damn clean, been in a minor accident previously but has been fixed and so the car has been given a completely new paint job that looks close to looking factory.
Test drove it, floored it, kicked the tires, opened the hood, listened to that sweet *** LS1 purr, the whole bit... everything seemed to check okay.
however that 122k scares me a bit and thats my main question...I know the LS series of motors are pretty bullitt proof but im kinda new to the camaro scene (technical wise) although I've always wanted one. Its safe to say that I am more of a GM guy, I once had a V8 STS a 1994, was totaled (not my fault) and so my cousin sold me her V6 pony for dirt cheap and i couldn't refuse. However with the current release of the new camaro concept I've once again turned my head towards the General and the Camaro i speak of has caught my eye and heart .
So there u have it, mustang owner/driver...camaro admirer
So let me hear it guys...a safe buy???
PS Does anyone sell 5 speed conversion kits?

First of all, since it's at a dealership you never know what you're buying weather its 122k mile vehicle, or a 50k mile vehicle. Have the car looked over bumper to bumper, if it was taken care off, 122k wouldnt be much of a worry for only $5888.
Second, you wouldn't want a 5 speed swap, but a 6 speed, but the Auto is quite formidable as is. Good luck.

Nothing is wrong with ls1 in z28s, now 98 LS1's are the most primative of F-body ls1's, we have goofy things, the PCM is totally differnt, if you ever go MAJOR power its lacking some tables used to tune FI perfectly, we have the lesser intake (98-00), *slightly* worse heads, the PCM does not shut of the AC compressor fast enought at WOT causing the clutch inside to burn out (can be fixed with tuning software). Now this is important, if you do get this car and change out the oil pump, DO NOT get a higher volume pump, very few 98's came with a porous section on the block that with a higher volume pump cause it to leak oil (i was one of the few) so just stay away from a higher volume pump and you will be fine. Dont get me wrong, i love the 98's and many say that 98's and 02's are the best (although most have 98's or 02's in that group). We do have the larger injectors, which are offered again later and some other perks.

On a high note, im studying to be a certified automotive technician. Im going to class 5 days a week, all automotive baby! Suspension brakes, drivetrain, engine perforamnce and more . And its not all classroom brawl, the program is about 80% hands on (out in the bays) and 20% text.

I personally went and looked at this car. Didnt drive it but it looked clean and i did hear it run. So i wouldnt worry about mileage as long as the car was taken care of. I have personally owned 8 4th gens F-Bodies and i had a 94 Z28 with 183,500 on it when i sold it so it all depends! I say check it out and if all is good go for it!

no good hand held programmers, but hey can take a bigger shot of dry nitrous than some right? Mine only had 45k on it but I did pay 10k 2 years ago. It now has 63k without major failures. Well just ring and pinion failures, but Im mean.

no real problems with the car itself. 150hp nitrous launches with slicks, 3.73 gears and a 3800rpm converter will always break a 7.5" rear end eventually.

I'm more concerned with the "minor" body damage and complete paint. If it damage was minor, only repair and painting the affected panel would be needed. Check all the jams carefully, look for missing hardware. Used car lots are netorious for cheep paint to cover problems. I worked in autobody shops for about 9 years. I know how cheep they can be. When they do have work done they go with the cheepest paint/body guy they can find.
I say walk, I'd rather have an original car with a couple imperfections than an unknown.

how strong is GMs 7.5 anyway? I know Fords 7.5 (i have one) is crap with anything over 300hpalso,
BTW the z28 use a limited slip dif right?

i got a 98 auto z28 with 110k miles. nothing major except that i got it for 6grand cuz of a 'previous accident' that was now fixed. i fucked up however and didnt check everything over, im missing tons of interior clips, lots of broken plastic pieces, unaligned hood, doors, fenders, shitty macco special paint work, ect. im still happy, but i do punch myself sometimes for being stupid. IF its clean and all, you're gonna get a hell of a deal. so BUY THE ******. good luck
