High Mileage
I may get a 98-02 z28, and I was curious how high mileage is too high as far avoiding major maintenance bills. I was hoping to stay under 70k miles. Any thoughts?
Also, how much would a typical engine rebuild cost just to return the car to stock factory conditions? It it's not very expensive, then the cheapness of a high mileage car may be worth it.

Generally, when a '98-'02 Z28 hits 100,000 miles, then entire car self-destructs. The engine shatters like glass, the transmission blows though the floor pan, and the rear slids out from under the car and melts to the ground. The paint turns to dust, and the interior releases toxic chemicals that kill the driver within 30 seconds if you don't escape from the cabin....
Truth is, there really is no magic mileage at which you're safe or unsafe from major repair. It all has to do with maintanence on the part of the prior owners. You can have a car with major problems at 50k miles because it only had 2 oil changes, or you can have a 100k mile car that's running like a champ.
But, as with any car the higher the mileage the more risk there is that parts will break, but the risk is no greater than any other used car. Try to find one with the lowest mileage you can afford, but don't be afraid of a good deal on a higher mileage car so long as you get a good feeling about the care that the previous owner has given the car.
Good luck in your search.

There are some little things that seem to be issues for these cars; stuff like power window motors, blown speakers, little squeaks and rattles as the car ages, etc.
For the most part, the big stuff holds up pretty well if it's been maintained properly and not beat to death.
Of course, this is all assuming you are looking at stock/near stock cars. If you plan to buy something heavily modded, then all bets are off. You might get a gem if it was set up properly, or you might get a nightmare.

these are definately hardy cars that as RPM says, as long as not beat on, will last a long time. i myself was kinda skeptical at first with my 98 w/ 97k mi, but i am totally reassured with the car now and really have no reservations about the TA maybe outlasting my ***!

Im at about 97k right now, beat on HARD since about 60k. Just got a new clutch at about 93k after daily driving beating the **** out of it, powershifting about 15-20 times a day. Also had drag radials on for a while and the stock 10 bolt is starting to make a little noise when turning if you listin very very closely (or maybe im hearing things). Other than that and a bent 4th gear shift fork from pretty much learning how to drive a manual on this car its been maintained and runs good.
