Default Best LSX for MPG/Performance

I am in the early stages of doing an LSX swap into my S10 but I cant figure out what engine to use. I only want to use an LS motor but will the 5.3 or 6.0 (LQ4 or LQ9) get the type of gas mileage that I see LS! S10s getting. I can get a 5.3 for tons cheaper than an LS1 and could use the excess money on mods but I dont want to hurt my possible MPG. I will be running a t-56. What kind of horsepower could I get with a 5.3 with intake, exhaust and a good tune?
Thanks

The LS7 is hands down the best power for gas mileage engine in the stock LSX platform (in my opinion).

Oh yeah, but it costs $13,000.

I'm sure almost an LS motor will be efficient with a M6. Look at the LS3 Vettes, they are pulling great MPGs for what they are.

A motor more expensive than the truck is always a good idea. Reliable 500hp. sounds logical

Pay no attention to the price tag. Just do it.

Right now I get 14mpg with my 1500hd on the freeway. I want something more economical but still cool and a sleeper S10 sound good to me. I have a friend with a LS1 S1o getting 29mpg highway with a M6.

Fuel economy is based on several things, but I think the ones which impact you the most are first, mass, i.e. the all aluminum LS1 is about 100lbs lighter. I think you will also find that the LS-1 has higher compression which I think is a little more eff. but I'm not sure if that overcomes the premium full hit you will take.
