Default Damn cars

I guess I'm very lucky I've been playing with different shims for my rocker arms. Look what I just found. Beats finding it "the other way"! I can only hope Nasty can get me a replacement in time for the races Saturday....

Very good question. Can't say I've ever seen a roller-tip eat into a rocker arm before....

Turns out there is more than 1. At least 1 ea int & exh rocker arm are this way. This one is by far the worst.

Yeah, you may have found the rocker but where is the rest of it? Oil pan or in between?

No, these are Harland Sharp 1.8 aluminum roller rocker arms Steph. With about 5k miles on them! And the rest of it would be dust in the bottom of the pan. The roller ground into the rocker arm (hard steel vs alum).

Hey Ellis - or whoever, do you suppose this bad one could have moved laterally enough to be pushing the valve stem sideways enough to ruin the valve seal? Since that one was on my cyl that is using oil....

Ouch... Man, can't anyone build a rocker arm that doesn't have some kind of problem?

Wow that really sucks Mark. With all the trouble with aftermarket rocker arms that I've been seeing it's making me appreciate my stockers more and more That may change when my needle bearings start showing up on my drain plug, but it hasn't happened yet

Heh... or if yours accidentally get hit by something and the needle bearings burst out and scatter into your head.

That is just insane Mark
No matter how hard we ran the 1st & 2nd gens, I've never seen that much damage, especially in just 5k miles.

Totally sucks but good thing you caught it now - or you would end up buying one of those nifty new crated 7's

Mark are you going with the same kind/brand of rockers or do you have a new plan for rockerarms?

Bill & I took a closer look at my rocker arms last night & found most of them (if not all) have the same problem. And they are ALL eating into the rocker arm to the left, so it almost has to be a design problem.

PS I found an old post by someone else with the EXACT same problem.

I have seen that before and in all instances it turned out to be a problem with the heads not being machined straight or bad valve guilds. Because there is no reason for that except if the valve is pushing sidways. And if you are having a cyl. eat oil it is most certianly the case. I can get them replaced for you but I would say it is going to happen again if the heads are not fixed.

Just got off the phone with Nasty. Thanks for being Johnny-on-the-spot & taking care of this so quickly Nate! I will pull mine off tonight & box them up. I await your PM with the shipping details....

Interesting info about other LS1 guys having this issue, and how the shaft mounted design amplifies it, while old school SBC heads could get away with it due to the individual floating rocker arms. So much for the globaly embraced "shaft rockers are better because they hold everything together" statement. It should have the disclaimer *IF the valve geometry has been tested to verify it's straight....the things you take for granted.

If the heads are stock what would cause that? Out of round roller tip? Tapered roller tip? out of round or tapered roller tip axle?

According to Nate:

Harlan Sharp says some of the LS1 heads are not milled correctly - valves seats or guides not straight, so when you put on some aluminum roller-tip rockers, this happens to some people. HS will replace 1 set & tell me have the heads gone thru or plan to buy more sets in the future.

With stock rockers you would never know.
