Default Oil consumption problems at 77.5K?

Hey all,

I was at the local car meet tonight and just checked my oil before I left. It's always changed at 3000 miles on the dot, and it seemed to be reading at the bottom of the dip stick. I've seen before that folks have had oil consumption issues with the Gen III motors, but I don't flog mine 24/7- plus it's my weekend only toy pretty much. It does mostly in town driving, so it stays below 3K (where I typically shift in 1st and sometimes 2nd). I'm going to be doing a head/cam/intake and potentially nitrous, and I'd rather not have nasty blow-by from possibly weak factory rings. The motor will be out while the head and cam are being done, so should I just have my friend doing the work look at the rings to be sure?

If the motor is going to be out,I would have him rebuild it.

Are you saying it's reading at the bottom of the fill line?

I'd look for a leak, if it is burning that much oil in 3 k miles, it would be smoking.

The alternative is not rings, but the PCV system eating oil.

Leak down test will tell the story.

What do the plugs look like?

I'm not with my goat right now so I can't put up a pic of exactly what level it is at, but I might be able to later. I just sent Ed Curtis an email since he's already done the heads and is currently doing my cam to see if we can figure something out bottom end wise that'll work with the big *** cam going in the car. Checked the end of the crank vent tube, no oil there has ever come out even after running the **** out of it on a top end run. This sucks frankly because I love my GTO to death, but it's awesome that you guys are willing to help me try and figure this crap out.

"crank vent tube" is that the valley cover tube on the front of the engine? If that shows no oil at all something isn't right with the PCV routing. Have you ever messed with it or installed a catch can, etc? Take a pic of the front passenger side of the engine showing the TB and valve cover with the fuel rail cover off.

I spoke with a couple people including Ed, and he's seen this exact problem before. It is the PCV, and I'll be making a catch can setup when the head/cam/intake gets done here pretty soon. Bout had a heart attack at the young age of 19 considering the costs of a total engine rebuild

A catch can is a good idea and a home made one an even better one. You can make something that will work better than most if not all available ones.

A catch can however is not going to fix a large oil consumption issue if you have it. It would just fill up the can and over flow with that much. They are made to hold one to several ounces and never get to capacity unless there is another problem.
