Default Cam/intake/bolton 99 Formula vs 500+ rwhp 04 Cobra

My mods are 236/240 112 lsa cam, fast 90, 4400 stall & most boltons. Not sure what the Cobra has done but it must have been over 500 rwhp with bolt ons, pulley, ect.

First off, this was at a quarter mile track. Wednesday night TNT at New York International Raceway Park. I'm looking for a good race when a C6 Z06 pulls into the lanes. I know how fast they are on the street but often they run high 11's or low 12's at the track. But I wasn't quick enough and someone else beat me to the spot next to him.

So I'm in the left lane waiting for someone to pull up next to me and here comes a red 2004 Mustang Cobra pulling into the right lane next to me. I had seen the guy in the pits with a bag of ice on his motor so I figure him for the kind of guy who doesn't leave his car stock for long.

I do a five second burnout on my bald mickey thompson street radials and stage. The light counts down and on the third yellow I feather the launch so I don't spin. Even still I spun just a tad but then I hooked and was gone. My car shifts into second and I look over and see no one next to me. Around 80 my car hits third hard and I still see no one next to me.

Now the finish line is in sight. I'm gonna win easily! But then as I am approaching the last 10-20 feet of the track he is next to me and reeling me in fast. We both cross the finish line neck and neck with him passing me in the process. At the end it was so close I honestly didn't know who won the race. I didn't see which lane got the win light because I was watching his car as he went by me.

Needless to say my heart was pounding and it was a loooooong ride to the slip station. Then I get the slip and read the results.

Me-------> 11.8 @ 116 on a 1.7 60'
Cobra----> 11.8 @ 124 on a 2.1 60'

Then I looked at the bottom of the slip. LEFT FIRST! I beat him on the tree and that ended up being the difference. I won the race by .0541 which I believe is the closest finish I have ever had. I gave him a thumbs up in the pits but he either didn't see me or didn't want to. Either way it was a beautiful car and a great race.

I'm guessing it had around 500 rwhp by the 124 mph trap speed. I tried to run the Z06 after that but I never got the chance. Too bad because I saw him run a 12.0 and a 11.9 so it would have been close.

But like Dom says:

"It don't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winnings winning".

That quotes for you John

Nice kill on the supra...errr, I mean cobra. The last time I went to the track I dusted a mean cobra...to bad he couldnt get off the line and he just gave up. All that power and not being able to get it to the ground must suck...they might as well be a FWD. lolz

Nice win! I'm sure you realize he has enough power to just crack a 10 with driver and traction permitting. 124 traps on a 2.1 60' is actually very strong.

Definately. But that tends to be the thing about stick shifts at my track. Most (not all) don't get great 60's and or don't shift perfectly. That's why I love my stalled auto. Once I get new tires I should back in the 1.5-1.6x 60' range again. Then I'll really be dangerous

But clearly he had me out powered. If he had a slightly better reaction time or 60' he would have won. But he didn't so I got the win.

Now all I need is a roll bar and spray so I can hit some 124 traps! His car was beautiful though. Not a scratch or mark on it.

Badass story man! Felt like I was riding shotgun in your car.

Sweet kill too. Those automatics are hell at the track!

+1....it always seems like I get put next to one out of the three following people

1: A guy bringing his 90's Silverado with flows to the track

2: Latino in his Civic that has no idea how to stage and causes me to wait 3 minutes while he figures it out and my tires are getting colder

3: Saturday night special drag car. You know, those cars with an ugly paint job, setup for the 1/8th mile, open headers so I can't hear my car, and in the end they run high 12's.

I went to the track twice. Made 3-4 passes each time. Each run besides 1 brought me a sub 1.7 60'.

Quoted for the truth! #3 Sat. night special. I will almost be put against a fox dressed in full drag, roll bar, bigs and littles, open headers etc. Im sitting in my stock looking f-body looking over thinking im toast, and they run a mid high 12...

hybrid's are very popular on street night also for some reason? gtf off the track and go hug some damn trees or something!

Were you running full suspension and a 10" slick or what? Just about every Cobra or GT500 I have seen run, had a hell of a time getting under a 2.0.

I agree...on 17' DR's I have a 1.70. I need a clutch then I should get some 1.6's. And yes these cars are very tricky to launch......good kill OP.

My Cobra with stock suspension other than Eibach lowering springs pulled 1.5 60' all night long every pass.
