2000 Firebird Trans Am WS.6 vs. 2011 Mustang GT 5.0
So it had been a long day at work, and I went to meet a few of my friends who had flown in from Cali at a local Red Robin. Found out when I got to the restaurant that my dad was there when I saw his car. A 2011 Mustang GT. The new 5.0. He's all parked in a corner, away from everyone and everything, so he is really easy to see. So I park next to him and head into the restaurant.
About 2 am we all leave and go hang around the cars. They all love American Muscle, so there instantly starts a small debate on which would win. At this point, none of my friends knew I had my Trans Am. But they knew he had his Mustang. So I stayed silent and we talked about which car would win. I'm trying to hold a smile the whole time.
We're finally about to leave the parking lot, and I got in my car. They are hella surprised as I started it up. But anyways. We all go our separate ways, and I end up next to my dad in his Mustang at a red light. I just look at him.
You can guess where this is going.
Green light. He launches. Tires don't quite catch and he does a small burnout before hooking, then he's off. I wait for my clutch to catch (because I still have the stock 10 bolt), then it's pedal to the medal for me. BAM! Into second I go, and I've pulled about half a car length ahead of him as we both shift into third. It's close. He got the gear change a bit faster then I did, so he's slowly catching back up. BAM! Into fourth. He's about 2 feet ahead of me.
It's at that point I look down at my speedometer and realize how just fast I'm going. Swearing, I hit the brakes. Dang it. He realized the same thing at about the same time, and hit the brakes too. We take it easy the rest of the way home, and laugh about it after pulling into the garage.
Not too shabby for a 123k mile car with only exhaust and smooth bellows.
I've got stickier tires now and I'll be ordering a Fab 9" before the summer. It'll be time for a rematch soon.

He's the original owner, he's had it...about a year and a half now. Give or take. And 6 spd manual. We're a stick shift family, thank goodness. Even the women.
I figured it was worth posting as a death story. He's an f-body man too, he's had a '95 z28 and a '97 Firebird Formula back when has was younger. It's nice to finally join the muscle car part of the family, and I'm never going back.

3.73 gearing, I've got 3.42. I've driven his Mustang, it's a blast. And yeah, I had a problem with the torque management as well when I was driving it hard or trying to launch. It's a good car, but it's got its share of problems just like our f-bodies.

I call shenanigans on those high rwhp numbers (many of which were found to be dyno'd in a gear other than 1:1)... when a boss puts down less and is rated higher I just have a hard time believing it. Not to mention the 1/4 mile times don't match up with that kind of rwhp and the curb weight.
If not mistaken 370-380ish is what a new 5.0 puts down in stock form when dyno'd in 5th (1:1)... you can easily inflate the numbers by using 4th though.
Livernoise Motorsports claims they put down 375rwhp then 391rwhp after 2000 miles were put on their test car. So who knows... maybe 400rwhp is possible and I'm just jealous.
