Default SRT8 Jeep gives my 402 a helluva roll race

First and foremost: no vids, sorry fellas. Been filming my drive to work every day for 3 weeks now but today I left it in the glove box.

Ran a pre-2012 SRT8. Guy gave me a surprisingly good run on the freeway in multiple 70-100'ish runs and a 75-160+ where his brick wall JEEP got faster as the speeds increased! Most runs I was chasing him - just how it had to work to be safe.

The 75-160+ run went thus:

~me behind his dark red SRT8 in the far right lane passing a small cluster of cars~
'wow that's a long stretch of clear road ahead - not counting the few cars in the far left lane. I need to get side by side' I think.

But it's not to be as he changes lanes after I already starting changing lanes, causing me to cover the brakes just as he goes WOT! My nerves on a hair trigger, almost shaking from the adrenaline in me manage to only let him get a truck length ahead before my car is screaming after him and his weird sounding exhaust.

'ok his pull is stopped' I think to myself, then the little fear of losing that resides high up in your chest whenever you race recedes as I reclaim the car lead he stole from me. 'phew!'

More confident now, I reach for my blinker just as we pass a car going sane speeds and the physics of the moment hit me: 'I can't see around his SUV and we are hauling ***'. I decide to stay behind him. Not that it mattered, because to my surprise - almost shock - I find that I am suddenly WOT and not gaining on him now and we are in the triple digits!

My trans managed to shift into overdrive with only a blip of the throttle (it's been an issue) and now my speedo just swept past 160mph and I still aint gaining on this TRUCK! WTF?! I let out and get on the brakes and he quickly follows my lead, ending our last and best run.

I tried signing up on the SRT8 forums but haven't got a confirmation email yet. Want to find this guy and find out his mods. Anybody on here know which forum a guy like this would use with his Jeep SRT8? Color was dark red, maybe a burgundy color and had the dual center exit exhaust of the pre-2012, pre-392 SRT8 jeeps. Hood bulge was pretty large, almost a small cowl induction look to it. Ran him on his morning commute into Seattle, Washington.

How fast do you run 1/4? I bet you ran into a built vortech srt8.

wouldnt that suck to find out he only has a catback on it? haha jk. Those jeeps have always been crazy strong for an suv. There miles ahead of the TB SS. A friend of mine had the older srt8 jeep. Small cam, full exhaust, vortech t trim on 8psi. 10.93 at 123mph. And it pulled hard all the way to 150ish.

I heard absolutely nothing besides his fairly quite aftermarket exhaust. Weird sounding almost ricer exhaust with the monotone sound of a turbo engine. Excpe I heard no blower whine, no BOV or turbo sucking/spooling sound, nothing. I just found out it was a older model after browsing SRT8 pictures btw.

I got no times on my car in the 1/4 with this setup. When I was stock gears, stock posi, stock bottom end with small cam, unported LS3 heads I got one and only one pass before my posi blew up: 12.0 @ 115mph. I got at least another 8mph now with the 402ci shortblock, 1/2 point higher compression, fully ported heads, and 10 degrees bigger cam. Probably more like 10mph.

Yea if i had to guess... your running 123-125mph in average weather. Whats the vehicle weight? Fast intake? All the bolt ons?

No N/A SRT8 is going to keep up with you at 150-160mph. Either he had a **** TON of spray or he has some quiet blower under that hood.

GTO with me in is 3900lbs, fully ported LS3 intake, UDP, Kooks headers/ Spintech catback, 17" stock rims on street tires with 36psi, fresh plugs/wires/filter/oil change. And dozens and dozens of other things done to suspension/engine/trans that are there but don't really bear any weight in this race.

And remember, I was behind him and no doubt getting some kind of slip stream effect from his brick. Probably one and a half cars back as we past 160mph hard with both of us still pulling hard. Don't even think a stock 392 SRT8 can DO 160mph, less yet a older one.

Those jeeps are limited to like 120 or 130. So to get that brick to hit those speeds you're looking at 6-700awhp at least.

Dont need that much power. They get up to speed fairly easily. That guys that went 10.93 at 123 made 560awhp. And it pulled hard all the way to 160

I find that hard to believe. They are AWD, very un-aerodynamic, and weigh quite a bit more. At 630rwhp I can get to 150 fairly easy but I am RWD, a lot more dynamic at high speeds and weigh less.

they arent as un-aero as you think. Theres A LOT of r&d in those things. Like i said... they are miles ahead of the TB SS. Same weight, same power... the jeep always runs away. Ther AWD is a lot like the evo vs the sti... Evos always seem to pull strong in triple digits vs the STI cant move.

And i could actually hit 160mph fairly easily in my stock boss with only 396whp. But its geared to hit 160 in its 1:1 gear.. my next gear is .65 and i havent even bother to stay in it in 6th

My GTO stock weight was 3770lbs. I dropped around 200lbs off it already, I just need to drop a foot of height and 200lbs off of me now.

I hear you on that. SRT8 Jeep is totally a daily driver I have on my list one day. I went against a z06 to like 170-180 and man after about 150-160 the thing just opened up on me. I'm talking about form 160-180 he pulled like 3 more cars on me.

Just simple physics. SS, Jeep are big. They are literally bricks. That's why I'm saying to be able to keep up to 160 in those things WITH AWD you need some serious power.

The 6.1 Jeeps are actually faster than the 392's due to a pretty big weight gain. Go on cherokeeSRT forum and they hate chrysler bc of this. $65k with more hp and still cant beat the previous model. Even the SRT engineers said that its a driver race between the two.

While its very unlikely it was a NA jeep its not impossible. I have seen 440's run to 170 with no problem. Also seen a red NA jeep carry the wheels past the 60ft and run mid 10's. Then theres the rare big cube aluminum blocks out there.

Its hard to say what he had. If he was a big cube/power adder he should have pulled u. Bolt on/power adder most times run high teens with some on kill set ups in the 120's. My guess would be bolt on, h/c, power adder...
