Finally Raced the 96 Cobra
Well here it is guys. The thread was locked, the fights and trash talking between Chevy and Ford guys went on for six pages here at LS1tech, but the results are in.
If any of you remember back in early February I asked whether or not my Black 1999 Camaro Z28 Auto Hardtop would run good against my friend's newly purchased 1996 Mystic Mustang Cobra. Since the weather has cleared up and its somewhat nice out, we finally got the chance to run tonight on a good stretch from nearly a dead stop on our way to the bar. He was already stopped when I came up to him. I got next to him and started to get his attention as if to let him know that I wanted to race. When he noticed I was ready to race he got started in 1st (The Cobra is manual), and I knew that he was on it so I put the pedal ALL the way down and was a half car ahead until about 50 mph where he started to catch up. I knew the LS1 would do its job and noticed in the corner of my eye out my drivers window that the Cobra lurched back for its next shift, and I started to pull away. It wasn't until 100 mph or so that we each let off and when we did his front bumper was basically at my rear bumper. It was a solid race, and there were many parts to argue about why he lost. He said he had trouble getting traction when we took off, but I was fine. Also, he said that he had some trouble shifting. In any case, that is what happened. He said he wants a rematch when its warmer so that his tires can grab better. We will see what happens again when the 275s go out back of my car.

Nice kill! Was his Cobra stock?? I didnt read the thread that got locked . If it was stock he has a nice-running car. From what I understand the 96 Cobra was only supposed to be rated at 285hp or so. Good kill regardless.

Good kill. +1 on the cobra not being stock. Probably had gears and exhaust. FWIW they came with 305hp 300tq from the factory and those #'s were right unlike the 99 cobras. -Mark

I agree that he wasnt stock....
Granted its not a camaro but i think you can get the picture...
My buddy raced a 96 cobra from a 35 roll to 100 in his modded 03 GT V6 tiburon...the cobra only beat him by 1.5 cars....
Now with that same tiburon, later on we met up and he raced my buddys 98 camaro SS that was 100% stock. From the same roll, the camaro SS pulled him by 3 cars too 100...

The Cobra belongs to a very good friend of mine. I know exactly what is done to it. It is the 4-Valve 305 hp 4.6 motor with a five speed, 3.27 posi, and a flowmaster catback. Thats basically it for the powertrain aside from big cross drilled/slotted rotors and 275's on all four corners. He bought it two months ago with 38,000 miles on it, and its in tip top shape. The Cobras are not slow in stock form, i just wanted to let you all know. Perhaps my LS1 is one of the slower ones made, or my 2.73's aren't helping.

96 Cobras aren't that great. My cousin has one bored .20 over, intake, exhaust, ford racing clutch, and 4.10's in it and it doesn't impress me at all. Granted, he's not the best driver, but with those mods, he should be a hell of a lot faster than he is. A kid I know that had an auto 96 T/A with just 3.73's took him.

I would definitely say he's either not the best driver, or the car isn't quite up to snuff... cuz if he's at stock compression, he should be in the low-mid 13s easily, depending on the extent of his exhaust. But a Cobra with LTs and 4.10s and 4.30s REALLY wakes up.

Different rears but its strange you'd think the IRS in the 99 wouldn't hook as well as the solid in the 96. I also think they tightned up the frame a little from 98 to the new style in 99 but not sure about that one.

The earlier Cobra's just didn't have the power the post fix 99 cars had. Magazine times are high 13's low 14's. Those cars actually had a narrower powerband so if your friend wasn't on his game as far as shifting it would make a huge difference. I have found 9 times out of 10 in the heat of battle than a slower auto car can edge out a faster manual car. (with two average drivers). Heck I have killed cars and then the damn 2-3 shift issue reared its ugly head and then they have been able to come from behind

Cobra's wheel hop like a mother but they don't have the torque to really get that crazy on a launch if you know what your doing. Mine liked to go sideways pretty hard on the 1-2 at 7,000 rpm.

Trapping over 101 and running high 13's stock? Hmmmm, my GTP never lost to a 96-98 cobra and I know it only trapped about 94 pre-cam. I've never been impressed with any stang in those years.
