Default leaking steering rack...

not sure this belongs here...not really suspension related...but its not gears/axle either.

i think my steering rack is leaking (could just be the line), so i'm doing some prelim research.

what are options on steering racks?

rather not go junkyard/used.

are there cheap rebuilds that are crap? well built rebuilds? full on aftermarkets?

funny you ask, I just ordered a new rack from http://rockauto.com/

For my Vette, the ACDELCO's are on a nationwide back order (go figure), but the other option is to send yours to them, and they will completely rebuild it and send it back. ~$513 vs 1000+ for a dealership one..

I was told turn one rebuilds steering racks when I bought my pump, but you'd have to ship it off to them.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/suspensio...-question.html

I just went to Rockauto.com to look up the PNs for a 98+ rack and it shows the same part numbers used by a 93-97 F-Car.

I know that isn't right because the steering shaft knub is clocked 90* between the two genres.

I now need to go check mine to make sure it has the sames turns from center to lock going both left and right.

Good catch Mitch...

the other option is to send yours to them and they will refurb it and send it back, I doubt they would change the steering shaft..unless of course it is stripped/broken

i found remanufactured ones through the auto parts store.

they list 2 versions:

"w/Firm Ride-Handling Suspension (F41)"
and
"Exc. w/Firm Ride-Handling Suspension (F41)"

my guess is the v6 version and v8 version??

can't really have the car down for that long to ship it off for rebuild. other option is buy it through GMpartsdirect for alot more $$....not sure theirs come with the inner tie-rods either.

F41 is for F-Cars delivered with non-Z-rated tires.

There is a place in Ft. Worth Texas that rebuilds steering racks. I think the name of the place is Texas Steer or something like that. I am thinking about trying them myself.

Yes, a "complete unit" includes the inner tie rods.

Not the outers, though.

so what the hell is the difference in the two suspensions? faster ratio?

i'm guessing you have to look at the sticker to figure it out since the car is many years old.
is the sticker the one on the door?
