Default 130k On Stock Decarbons what to do?

Well guys my stock shocks are right at 130k and lately I've also been eyeing a projector hid kit (nothing wrong with my lights now) from BLS but I feel the shocks maybe a little more of a necessity right now.

So the purpose of this thread is to tell me why my 130k decarbons have to go in favor of some bilsteins lol. I've never owned a car long enough to know when to replace the shocks. I mean i know if they are bottoming out or bouncing crazy then they are shot but mine "seem" to be fine. Someone talk me into doing the bilsteins over new headlights lol.

IMO, you have no business doing any mods to your car until you replace those worn out shocks. New the DeCarbons are decent (although a lot of guys think they are garbage from the get-go) but after 50-60k they are completely worn out. You won't believe the difference new Bilsteins will make to your car. At 130k on originals, you have next to no damping from those shocks.

Well the car is about as modded as i want it right no anyway lol, i just figured when the shock were finally bad i'd notice them bottoming out and bouncing like crazy when i hit a pot hole? maybe itll be one of those things where i wont notice how bad they were until i get some new bilsteins in there

also jww i'm going to do new strut mounts with the shocks but is there anything else that i should get with the shocks to mount them up or should everything else be able to be reused

Dont forget the isolators, front dust cover, sway bar links, and maybe the lower mounts.

I just did my 97' (stock Decarbons/Sportlines) with BMR/SLP Billsteins and it is an amazing difference. My right front assymbly is rusted together at the shock shaft and mount so if someone were to buy my Sportlines they would have to cut the shaft to get the spring so for me it would be easier at the time of install to have the above items on hand.

An easy test is usually to press down on the corner of the car to compress the suspension and then let go. If it stands up quickly and solidly, things are generally good. If you get any bit of rebound or bounce, the shock is shot. But... I've found this test doesn't work so well on these cars. (Probably because the springs are so stiff.)

I give you my personal guarantee that your shocks (with 130K on them) are dead and dangerous. Replacing them should be your first order of business. If you get the SLP Bilsteins on the car, you'll wonder how you've lived so long without them!

There are a lot of people running the BMR/Bilstein combo and love it. I highly recommend them for anyone on a budget or looking for an excellent improvement as a street/strip upgrade.

Just did a bilstein install on my dad's 02 SS. The only items that were replaced were the shocks, the mounts and sway bar endlinks. The isolators and the boots were reused. The stock shocks were just shy of 100K miles. The bilsteins are a nice set up compared to the stockers.

DeCarbon's are awful, fairly positive anything would be an upgrade. If I were on a budget I would do KYB AGX's or Bilsteins and if money wasn't a concern I'd go with a Koni setup.

I had both the AGXs and the Bilsteins. At first I THOUGHT I preferred the KYBs but overtime, the Bilsteins were the better deal, especially since they both cost about the same right now.

Yep, the decarbons are wasted after 60,000 miles. I just rode in a friends Firebird with 84,000 miles and stock decarbons. The ride was so bad I got motion sickness. Serious.

Thanks guys, I'm getting bilsteins as well as new strut mounts and isolators. Too bad there doesnt seem to be a good solid brand other than oem for the mounts but I guess I'll cross that bridge when it comes.

Also just wondering since I'm going to be there whats everyones thoughts on getting new rubber bushings all around up front? Mine aren't cracked and the car has had an easy life on florida roads but I figure I might as well do it for $100 in parts that it costs. I was looking on the best way to get the bushings off but most of what I found is for saving the inner sleeve for polys, idc about the sleeve since mine will be oem rubber so whats the best way?

I had a machine shop press mine out.

But I also meant Moog for the shock mounts. Cheaper than AC Delco OEM (usually), fit just as well, and have normal bolts instead of the stupid torx bolts on the driver side. I have them on my car.

get moog mounts from XXX or even XXX has them for 3$ more but no mailing wait, and call up bmr! i would recomend the bmr lowering springs with them, great upgrade with bmr springs/blistiens. i just did my whole set up and i absolutely love it, had the stock springs/decarbons at 81k and the difference was amazing. i feel like im driving around a handling machine lol. i fear no turns! no wheel hop, no bouncey feeling off bumps, i absolutely love it. its a bit stiffer of a ride but when your on the hwy in mexico and decide to wind her out she feels amazing!
