remove the center console, vinyl cover around your stick and unscrew the 4 bolts holding the shifter on and pour it in.....

dont have to remove the whole shifter assembly... there is a 'fill' plug on the side of the tranny. you just buy a gear oil pump (sometimes called an outboard motor pump) from pep boys or wherever for like $6. the pump is like the pump on a soap bottle with a hose coming off it to stick in the fill hole.

and actually, if you're just topping off a leaking tranny as opposed to doing an entire fluid change, i'd much more recommend using the fill plug as opposed to the tranny method, because the only real way to know if its filled to the right level is to fill it till it starts dripping from the fill hole.

Doesn't the T56 take ATF and not gear oil?

Yes, the owners manual calls for Dex III. you can also use Syncromesh. many agree that synthetic fluids are only safe on 01-02 cars, as the pre 01 blocker rings will deteriorate with synthetic fluids.
