Freeway on-ramp emissions checkpoints?
What is the story with these? happened to see one down in Dickinson/League City off I-45. Didnt see any cops around just a few white vans a sign saying "emissions testing site" and what looked like a camera. Are these just testing sites, or are they out to write tickets?
Never seen one before, I'm from VA but have been here for almost 3 years.
The checkpoint I saw was on 517 and 45.

I dunno But I have noticed,
Some parts of Texas is beginning to change,
Some people are getting tickets for not having a front license plate
I hope they don't become like California and stay Pro the Car enthusiasts

Yes, those have been around the Metroplex here for several years now. As I understand it they are the real deal, they measure emmisions as you drive by and if they are excessive will send you something in the mail about it. I think they want you to take it somewhere for a real check and I'm sure they have a way to jack with you if you don't, like not issue your next registration. Best advise is to shut off the car and coast through.

Holy cow. We don't even have annual (or any) inspections here in MI. I was shocked at that because even when I lived in MA twenty years ago, we had annual inspections. This, I am even more shocked at. Wow.

I don't know what you guys are talking about but those have been in Houston at various spots for over 10 years. I've driven past them several times with the T/A and never had an issue. From what I've heard they are measuring and averaging emissions for the city's total and not individual cars. I have never seen camera's taking photos of cars and never heard of anyone getting a ticket for this.

I used to brake boost when going through these until I got a letter in the mail saying I "SHOULD" have my vehicles checked for smog pollution.Funny but what they are doing is counting cars and pollution in the area.I guess my building boost wasn't funny to them

Ive seen about 2-3 of them around 360/183 area. And f*cked up thing is the way they put them. You cant see them, but when you there- you there. and its always on "acceleration" portion of the road.
+1 Avoid, if possible.

I've seen them here in austin before and heard the same about getting stuff in the mail. Honestly I have no idea how they can get any type of accurate measurment in an open environment with airflow and traffic. Seems like a load of bullshit to me.

The above posts about measuring average emissions is true. They are basically taking a survey or a census of emissions for that area. You wont get a ticket or something in the mail, if you think this you are a retard and need to slap yourself in the side of the head. I think it I am going to get a white van and a sign just so I can watch you tards shut your car off and coasting by and laugh my *** off.
