C8 Left on Blocks in Detroit After Thieves Steal Its Wheels

C8 Corvette

We’ve already seen a wrecked C8, and now we’ve got our first official wheel theft for a car that isn’t even out yet.

Detroit, to us, is the Motor City. The home of Motown, coney dogs, and some pretty tasty rectangular pizza. But sadly, Detroit is also a place that’s been hit hard in recent years. Though things have obviously improved, crime is still a thing. And not even our beloved automotive manufacturers are safe, as evidenced by this incredible footage obtained by MotorTrend and Car & Driver recently. Heck, the C8 Corvette hasn’t even landed in private hands yet, and we’ve already seen one wrecked. And now, we’re witnessing the first C8 to have its wheels stolen.

Somebody noticed the poor Corvette sitting on blocks on the side of a Detroit West Village street, so of course they had to capture the scene on video. It isn’t immediately clear who actually owns the car, but we can make some assumptions. No C8 has been delivered to private hands just yet, so we have to believe that this ‘Vette belongs to GM. But strangely, it isn’t wearing manufacturer plates. Just regular ‘ol Michigan ones. MotorTrend notes that it has a “1” sticker in the window, which means it could be part of a test fleet.

Clearly, the thieves who committed this crime aren’t terribly bright. They left the lug nuts laying nearby, for starters. And then there’s the obvious problems they’ll face trying to sell these wheels. We’re talking about a brand new car that isn’t even at dealerships yet, of course. So maybe throwing them up on Craigslist isn’t the best idea. We imagine that if the wheels do wind up on the web somewhere for sale, the car community will notice. If not GM themselves.

Regardless, let this serve as a warning. Maybe it’s not a great idea to park your Corvette on the side of the road in Detroit overnight. Or any major city for that matter. Especially in the dead of winter, what with snow plows and salt everywhere. And most definitely enterprising thieves just looking to make a quick buck any way they can.
